The leather is cut right at the bow junction.  No rolling or messing.

im 36 and want to make the transition from compound to instinctive shooting w/ a longbow and absorb as much as i can

Pointless as it may be for the original question, I can't help but to get in line with my Shrew praise ... even as I've long been in line for a take-down 54" Classic Hunter that otherwise (and aside from the rattlesnake backing) exactly mirrors my first Shrew. To mirror what others have said -- if you travel by air, don't mess around, Shrew or otherwise, but get a reliable take-down. I will not likely ever sell my one-piece CH, as it is the most perfect bow I've ever owned (and having owned many, that is saying something) ... except for air travel, where even 54" has become an expensive problem. No matter what happens to the rest of the world, I don't think Shrew will be seeing any serious economic downturns anytime soon! Happy new year to all. dave
