Have you guys heard of a good place to do a caribou hunt drop camp?  I was thinking transport to an area with good herd movement,  but using my own tent and food, then a pick up of meat and horns.  I would like something that doesn't break the bank and allows me to really hunt an area. I am a quebec resident so I would rather quebec as my location.  I have been looking at all of the outfitter sites and 4-6k seems average. That's way out of my ball park, I was hoping for 1000 from Montreal.  Let me know if you guys have done anything like this, or if this is even an option

Happy holidays,

Allan,

I am looking for something along these same lines as it has been something on my wish list. If I hear of anything, will cross-pollinate it your way, please do likewise.

Allan,

What would work for you in Quebec wouldn't for most of us since we would be required to have a guide/outfitter since most of are from out of province/country.

Many of us do what you describe in Alaska but there are flight services set up for the do-it-yourself crowd.  You'll just have to research and find out if flight services will accomodate your desires.  Flights aren't cheap however so you may need to have a small group of guys to pull it off cost effectively.

I am a professional hunting guide but have also been running unguided caribou camps for outfitters for about 15 years. I am only an employee and have no vested interest whatsoever.

Several outfitters in Quebec offer that package for under $3,000.00.

They supply air transportation from their base camp to the hunting camp and the return flight with your caribou, cabins with oil heaters, propane stoves, propane lights, beds, mattresses, pots, pans, dish ware, utensils, boats, motors, a meathouse, a generator and freezer, and unlimited fuel, etc.

Some also include moving you to another site where there are caribou if there are none at your designated camp or offer a discount if you wish to come back at another time.

A company representative is there to supervise the hunt, to assure everything functions properly, and to communicate with the base, etc.. He can include (at your request) services such as guiding, quartering, skinning, caping, meat care, etc.

You must drive to the base camp and bring your own food, sleeping bag, and personal hunting items.

It might be possible to make an arrangement with an outfitter to
just drop you off somewhere on your own but I am not aware
of it being offered.
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

ArkyBob and myself are interested in this same sort of hunt. Would Canada or Alaska be out best bet economically speaking?

It's been four years since I did the research, but I think that for US residents the cost of a guided Quebec hunt versus an Alaskan drop camp end up pretty similar.  I did Alaska, and definatley want to go back someday.  :readit:  )  But it can be a real bust as well if the animals aren't there while you are.  Our Alaska trip wasn't filled with game either, but hey, at least we were in Alaska, and that was worth the price of admission!
