Was wondering if there was some sort of spray that would help keep feathers dry yet retain shape in inclement weather? I use an open back quiver so feathers are exposed and in Oregon it gets wet quite often. Appreciate the help.

No Snow. Applied once before season and Im good to go....

In all seriousness, I have never heard of this technique.

Any silicone spray will help, but feathers squished together in a back quiver while continually exposed to moisture are going to get pretty ratty.  Could just slip a plastic bag over the fletching, top of the quiver.

DRI-TITE by Bohning.. I've used it for years with never an issue.

One thing I hate is wet feathers..Believe me,nothing works around here..You go in the brush and feathers get wet...

I finally just set up a bow with a bear rest and plastic vanes...If its dry I take the Brack and feathers...If its wet I take one of my Bears with vanes...

Thats the best solution I came up with for hunting in western Oregon...

Bill, I was hoping you would chime in. Do vanes fly well from a traditional bow? By that, I mean off the shelf. Perhaps your method might now be a bad alternative. Just get me half a dozen made up with some vanes for when the weathers nasty.

It'll take an elevated rest... which is what I think Bill was referring to.

I just tried to set my bow up like that but had to put the rest higher than I wanted to for proper vane clearance... around here I have the option of staying in when it rains.

Your other option would probably be a quiver that protects the fletch like a Catquiver or Safari Tuff.

Charlie, I think you might be right. I don't want to put a rest on my bows. Nothing personal against them, I just like to shoot off the shelf. I emailed HighNoonHunter on the quiver he built for MikeW. That is by far one of the best quivers I've seen. If I can talk him into making me one, I think that might solve a lot of my problems.

Yoiu shoot longbows...I don't know how a rest works on them...

It is not hard for me to go from shooting off the shelf to a elevated rest...No problem there...I also use shield cut vanes...Can't hardly tell they are not feathers...LOL

I tried the covered quiver route..I didn't like it...The shield cut vanes fly as good as feathers off the rest...Works for me...

 

I've never seen a shield cut vane. That's pretty cool looking.

Is the condom comment serious?  I mean, I don't see why it wouldn't work.  Buy my goodness, the potential for funny stories and awkward silences is mind-boggling! lol

Baby bottle liners work also..I think they come in 100 a pack..One liner per arrow...But it all gets to be a pain after a while...Crawling through the blackberries and you look down and half you bottle liners have come off and feathers are soaked...

I finally gave up and just went vanes for wet days...Much less hassle..

Those shield cut vanes makes it look more "traditional"...      

If you pull the baby bottle liner over the nock end with the nock sticking out of the liner it will stay on most of the time. It will come off on the shot silently and fall to the ground.  Hap
