I'm having trouble with bare shaft tuning. I want to shoot a axis shaft with 300 grains up front. I shoot a 67lb TD recurve but my draw is only 26 1/2" (I know people say I'm built like a tree stump.)Anyway. I'm shooting the axis 340 right now at about 28" and getting a left kick. I started at 31" and cut back 1/2" at a time. I've tried all the other sizes also and the 340 seems to fly the best,But not perfect. Any ideas?

Ryan, What if that left kick was being caused by nocks that were/are too tight?

What if that left kick was being caused by some quirk in your form?

What if that left kick was being caused by the arrow being too stiff to start with and the tail end is hitting the bow causing it to give a weak indication?

Bottom line is many things can cause an arrow to kick in any direction that have nothing to do with arrow spine and can never be fixed with tuning techniques. Use the planning method instead of the "kick" method. Another tip, never ever cut a shaft until you verify with point weight first otherwise if the problem is over stiff to start with, you'll not correct the problem and ruined an arrow in the process.....O.L.

The only problem I see with O.L.'s otherwise logical tuning recommendations is that if I were to get smart about this ... then where would I get a constant supply of stump and grouse arrows?    See you soon, O.L.  dave

right on why? do folks insist on cutting arrows so short I draw 26" and most of my arrows are 30" none under 29" it does not matter on overhang  if you have a short draw you will have a hard time tuneing arrows at 28" unless you hang alot of weight on the front as when you shorten them you also make them have a stiffer spline  

Gord, Short arrows make it look like you are drawing farther.
Makes you look taller if you use a short bow too.

Now I know why I like short bows!    

There is a legitimate reason to use shorter arrows. I like to draw the back of my broadhead to my index finger on the back of the bow...kind of like a clicker without the noise. I haven't found a carbon arrow I can cut that short though   :mad:  .

O.L I think my serving may be a bit to tight.. I am going to reserve and start over. I started out with 400's then went to the 340's. I went with a lighter point weight and still the same effects,so I think it may be in the serving

Just remembered another reason...
When you put a short arrow and bow in the rack for the photo shoot they make the animal look much larger.
