I just picked up a doz. of these fir shafts to try out. Looking at them I can't wait to make some arrows! Straight grain, good weight at 450grs., good wood! I think I may have found my new source of wood....

I am putting my final coat of SPAR on my first set from them too.  So far so good.  Do you know if they offer tapered shafts?  I didn't see it on the website.

I don't think they offer tapered shafts Dave. I didn't find them on their site anyway. When that Spar dries let me know what you think! It will be late next week that I will be able to finish some arrows. I'd like to know what you think.

I just made 2dz before Thanksgiving and I like them alot. My raw shafts were 450gr too and I thought they should have been a little heavier being that they were Douglas fir but I didn't tell them what I wanted weight wise either so my fault. Still ended up with arrows weighing 605gr.

I got some fir by way of Ted at Raptor that are tapered.  The taper is excellent. dino

Killinstuff, that is the final weight I would like to see out of these...600grs. What weight tip did you end up with. I like shooting 160gr. tips with woodies.

SlowBowinMO, I need to get out more often! LOL  If I would look around a bit I would have found someone like you to get these from.

They're deadly bits of gear, alright!

I got a few dozen, have been using them for a while now and have been very happy with them.  I use 125 grain field points or broadheads and they usually weigh 500 or so.  I cut them 28" to the back of the point, 3 fletch 5" shield.

They seem to be pretty tough.  Since I started trad archery a few years ago, I've made a couple dozen POC, a dozen Sitka Spruce, and and 3 dozen Doug Fir and I've broken 6 cedar shafts, 1 spruce shaft, and no Doug fir shafts.

Snag same here, 605gr with a 160gr STOS BH and field tips. Cut to 28 1/2". They take stain just as well as sitka spruce does also. Best to use a taper grinder on these too.

I just finished my Surewood arrows.  They came out very well.  I am very happy with the straightness, the way they took stain, the consistent weight and the overall weight.  I am shooting these out of a 52# Pronghorn takedown and the finished 29 inch BOP, 55-60 spine arrow came out at 540 grains with a 135 grain broadhead.  The first six out of the fletching jigs are within 3 grains of each other.

Hi Ron! It's good to hear they are pretty tough. Switching to another type of wood and not having any experience with it it's nice to get some feedback on how it performs.

Sounds like a good alternative to the ever diminishing supply of cedar!
