Morrison ILF, what do you think?

Doug,

The attraction for me is that it allows me to have a shorter overall bow for hunting. I have a 29" draw and shoot a 60" Shawnee and Cheyenne, but with the mini-14 riser I am able to shoot a 56" ILF with no stacking at all.

He doesn't rent them, but he will let you test drive any in-stock riser or limbs he has.

I had both the ILF longbow limbs and the Shawnee with Dakota limbs.  I prefer the Shawnee.  Just shoot it better, and the riser seems to compliment the longbow limbs better.  Perhaps a bit quieter as well.  For me.  But I'm not so good a shot, so take my opinion for what it's worth   :D .

Doug,

What BobG said, and also, with the ILF you get the stability of the deflexed riser (like with the Cheyenne), the ability to use Morrison longbow and recurve limbs as well as ILF limbs made by many other manufacturers, and the ability to tune the bow for weight and tiller. Lastly, if the limbs are not tightened all the way down, the limbs can be removed by hand in seconds, thus making transporting the bow extremely easy. The bow shoots a little better in my hands than my Shawnees and Cheyennes and I really like the fact that I can have a 56" bow using the Mini 14 riser that shoots as well as my 60 inch (or longer) Cheyennes and Shawnees. My draw length is 29 1/2", so even longer than BobG's. I don't recommend a longer draw for the 56" bow. Better to go to 58".

Bob Morrison says the longbow limbs are a little faster on the Shawnee, and some people prefer the straighter Shawnee riser, so MRD is very reasonable in saying that he prefers the Shawnee over the ILF. All the Morrisons are incredible, so you can't go wrong.

Allan, have you put "Long" ILF's on your 14" riser yet? How long was the bow? I have longs on mine now and it uses the same string as my 56" longbow which is a 53" string so I figure its a 57" curve with the long limbs but I cant find my tape measure anywhere.

The reason I ask is because someone else said the Mediums should make a 57" bow with the Mini 14 riser.

Lewis,

No, I haven't put my Morrison Dakota "F" longbow limbs on my Mini 14 riser yet, and probably won't get around to doing that for a week or two because of everything else I have going on right now. I will sure let you know what I think, but according to Bob Morrison, the "F" limbs will make the bow come out at about 62" AMO, which is about a 59" length when strung as I understand the AMO system. It sounds like you are also looking at the string length being around 3" shorter than the AMO length. Remember that other ILF limbs do not make the same length bow and are not even the same draw weight on the Morrison risers as they are on other ILF risers, so we may be talking apples and oranges. On the Morrisons I can discuss "A" through "F" length limbs and know what AMO length bow they will make with a given Morrison riser, but I can't compare other makes of limbs. Bob Morrison has a chart on his website that gives that information for his components. I have not measured the string on my Mini 14 with Dakota "C" limbs, but I would expect it to be 53".

I am taking about normal ILF limbs. The Longs I have according to the limbs are 68" on a 23" riser so since the 14" riser is 9" shorter it should make a 59" bow but my 53" string fits it which should mean the bow is actually 57" but I cant find my tape to actually measure it.

I was just curious if you had ever put Long ILF recurve limbs on it to see what it measureed.

Lewis,

It is difficult to compare the limbs you have with the Morrison limbs because Bob uses different angles on his limbs and limb pads due to the configuration of his deflexed riser. I know that the poundages of other limbs on the Morrison riser can be way off from what they are marked, which would indicate to me that the angles and therefore the overall length with a given set of limbs would also vary considerably. I only have Morrison limbs, so I don't know how they relate to other makes. BobG has WinEx recurve limbs on his Mini 14 and can give you the info on those limbs, and I am sure Bob Morrison and others have info on various makes of limbs and how they work on Morrison risers, but I have to plead total ignorance on that subject.

Can someone out there help Lewis with his questions?

The weight was pretty close as to what was marked on my riser subtracting the length difference of course. I dont think the limb pad angle is off by too much from other ILF risers and I wouldnt think that it would make a huge difference in the length being different but then again I may be wrong.

Mediums make a 56" bow on the 14" riser Lewis and they are true AMO so should take a 53" string.

The Morrison risers have different pad angles so that the limbs(Morrison at least) will be the same draw weight on each riser length.

Yeah but the ones I have are Longs and all of my 53" strings work perfectly on them, thats what is so confusing. And that is with the limbs bolted all the way in and then backed out half a turn then tuned to even tiller.

Yep 100% sure, I just found out that Mediums on a 14" riser makes a 54.5" bow so the longs would make a 56.5" so thats why my 53" string is working.

My WinEx mediums (recurve) still make a 56" bow on my mini-14 riser and in fact, I'm using the same string as I do on my "C" Dakota limbs, which I'm fairly certain is a 53" string. As Allan said, maybe Bob Morrison can clarify further.
