What is or are good starter bows for women to start out with? My wife actually wants to learn to shoot/Hunt etc with trad gear!  How could I get so lucky? I will get her a used bow first. Any help would be great!

When I was fifteen I got a Ben Pearson Colt, 35#. I still have it and a soft spot for those bows. The risers are medium heavy and stable, with a smallish grip. The AMO length on them is 62", so they are forgiving and have no pinch on the fingers. The shelf is flat, so I used a stick-on rest with it. You can usually get them for under a hundred dollars because they don't say Bear on them.

Does she want to start with a long bow or recurve? got both for mine to try ,both 40#. she loves to shoot the long bow over the recurve which really suprised me.

I don't shoot a long bow as of yet so she has no idea that they exist. I was going to start her out on a recurve.

I started with a Pearson Filly.  Now I shoot a Maddog longbow and a Kota Prairie Fire.  Both have nice size grips for small hands.  Can't beat the $ on the maddog.   www.tradstore.com/mta

Making real pretty arrows for her would be nice.Maybe pink or purple feathers would look nice.I think those are women colors.

Oh no.  If she starts shooting and hunting with you she'll never leave.      Mine says I have a life sentence.  I bought her a Jerry Hill Longbow many years ago.  Reasonable price as I recall.  30# D bow.

The Maddog bows are well made for an exceptional price. Doesn't hurt that Mike is a great guy to boot.

A couple recurves I like for starters, that also make great hunting bows:  the Chek-mate falcon  and the Greattree Volcano recurve.

Either one will not only be a great starter, but a great hunting bow!

The falcon is a 60" bow, and the Volcano a 58" bow. The falcon speaks for itself, if you do a search here, you can find a bunch of info on them.  The Volcano is relatively new and I am extremely impressed with its performance.
I bought one for my Girlfriend that is 40@28, shooting 1916's and she loves it ! Very reasonable price too.

The Ben Pearson Colt is a great starter bow, can be picked up pretty cheap, and you won't have any trouble getting your money back when it comes time to sell it...if you sell it.

You are right to start her off with a good used bow.  Let her get down the fundamentals, then bring her to a few 3-D shoots in the off season.  Most trad folks will be proud to let her trie their bows.  Do this until she finds a model that just feels right...like an extension of her body.  She needs to find the bow with the right "fit" for her.

My wife started and uses a 45# Kodiak Magnum. Of course green is her favorite color and that was the first  green bow she saw. She's very short, so she is not drawing the full weight by any means, but she shoots it well.
"Bushytail" is right about the feathers---she made sure I did a pink/purple combo for her fletching. Now our 4 yr. old daughter wants to shoot a "Real" bow and I've been informed that she is expecting pink arrows. I'll be only dad in the woods taking a kid hunting with pink arrows + she saw a pink .22 rifle in local sporting goods store and I was told that when she gets big enough, that's "probably what she could use"      :D

Check out the "Dale Stahl" bow in the classifieds! Excellent bow and price with both a sets of  limbs, I think 37 and 47#, should be about perfect.
I have one of Dale's bows and can't say enough about it. Go take a look. IMO best buy in the classifieds right now.

Now I have to say get her something in the 70# range or better. If my wife (love her dearly but) if she went hunting with me or invaded my shoot time with the boys it would ruin the whole thing. Careful!!!

I love sharing hunting and fishing experiences with my wife Tracy. Having grown up in Detroit she's not very good, but she's getting better. Her enthusiasm and joy at even the smallest success is infectious, like hunting with a kid. None of the camp Macho chest pounding crap, one of the main reasons I hunt solo or with Tracy only. If I have to waist time "chatting" on a hunt it damn well better be with my closest companion. A sleeping bag is allot warmer with two in it and somehow I don't think cuddling up to Pete by the light of a camp fire would be as romantic and comforting. The more I share my life with Tracy the better we understand each other and the stronger we are as a family. When my son Gunther can join us afield I'll have reached Nirvana.

Tracy is shooting a fleetwood champ 30# @ 28". I set her up with a set of arrows with floral patterned mainly purple and white wraps with 5" purple shield cut feathers. Her string silencers are purple rabbit fur. She is not the fanatic I am but really enjoys being afield and is hoping to be able to use my 45# @ 28" Ben Pearson colt for Caribou this fall.

Yes I'll let her put a purple flemish twist string or silencers on it for the hunt.
