In Missouri stump season starts in mid January and runs thru 15 September. Its good to get a group of friends in the woods to shoot arrows and B.S.

Sure, anybody can go pick on some defenseless, four-foot wide remnants of Doug firs and cedars.           (I used to live in Snohomish County.)  But REAL stump shooters step up to the challenge of shooting in The Granite State  (and occasionally AT the granite chunks wearing mossy camo. . .           )

(BTW, the POC shafting does much better than the Doug fir on the granite, in my experience.)

Just got back to this thread... great stuff... re shooting basketballs.... Please, be careful shooting any inflated ball.  I they get jammed against something, they have been known to bounce and arrow back!

Interesting to see a reference to a Belcher Longhorn.   Just today was thinking about selling my Lady Longhorn.    They're beatuiful bows, but mine doesn't get shot much, especially not that I've started making my own

We're having a bit of unseasonable warmth and Tuesday sun is threatened with acceptable temps up to about 4500 ft...   Hmm... may have to go get some more of those stumps... especially if I get the finish on the current bow.

I think this would fit what historically was called roving. Don't have enough of a redneck sound to it though, does it? Form used to be two or more archers went shooting together and took turns picking the next target of opportunity.

Long history to this anyway.

I went stump shooting with my son today and even though the weather was bitter we had a blast. Brought some hot chocolate along which made it better. We choose to shoot trashes, and if you look hard enough, you find quite a few. We took our limit and went home. Nice afternoon.

The thing about basketballs reminded me about how I like to keep a chartreuse tennis ball in my kit to use for target practice. Just toss it out in a field, or in the woods if you are taking your bow for a walk, and shoot it where it lands.

Something to keep in mind, in many states you cannot do stump shoot on public lands. It is considered target practice and it is not allowed. So, check the regs before you try this on public lands.

Nice day in the 50s in Illinois with sunshine and my son and I went out and shot lots of trashes in the State Park trails. Got the ok from the parkie as long as we would carry out all our trashes. Was surprised how well my field point went thru tin cans, and especially how hard they were to remove.
Pleasantly surprised how well my son shot the trashes too. This is just what he needed to get focused on accuracy. Thanks a million guys

To stump hunt public land you need to be able to honestly say you are small game hunting. Carry one BH and the rest can be blunts.  Squirrels and rabbits are the stated prey but in reality you are hunting those wily Trashes.

Nothing like a trash when the wind is blowing hard. They can run fast. Making a good shot on a moving trash is very exciting.

Today we hunted tin cans. On the ground, on top of a stump or rock. Whatever. Nasty little rascals when you hit them on the side and the arrow just hooks and buzzes by. This is a good time for blunts

In MN "target practice" is illegal on nearly all if not all public land, whether its with a 30-06 or a 30 lb bow. there are loop holes however. there is no closed season or liscence required to hunt unprotected species in MN. therefore whenever i am stumpshooting i am actually "hunting" skunks, gophers, coyotes, and porcupines. Check the IL regs sam you might find a similar loophole. but it is unbelievable the amount of trash there is on public land. last spring i had my huge bag to carry turkey decoys, a chair, ground blind etc. there is a ton of extra room in the bag and i filled it with cans and bottles on my way out. i should have sent the state a janitorial bill    good luck, dan.
