Charles (eidsvolling) really knows his stuff on orienteering...that what he teaches!!!  I bought his St Judes course on using the compass.  It was really just trying to help bid up an item for St Judes.  I really didn't need instruction as I've been hunting and in the woods all my like.  WRONG---I got to tell ya, I was totally enlighten at the things I did NOT know

He also had an idea on custom mapping and layering maps for your hunting areas...don't know if that is still on his dance ticket?

Anyway Question for Charles:

If you were going to map out an area for someone else with all the bells & whistles, What would be the Best Unit for both parties to work with?  Thanks...Doc

Well, unfortunately I'm going to have to decline to make specific brand and model recommendations.  My salary is paid by an outdoor retailer who sells GPS receivers.  If I offer public recommendations on which particular receiver to buy, I risk irritating my employer, their competitors, and the TradGang administrators, mebbe all at the same time.      :smileystooges:

I can reiterate the earlier recommendation for a site crammed with current GPS info:     gpsinformation.net .  Lots of reliable, specific info, although it needs better organization.

I bought a really cheap used magellan 315. it is several years old. it takes 15 seconds or so to get satalites but is super easy to use. I mainly use it for marking and sometimes its fun to look at the track I have walked. but my silva compass is always in my shirt pocket.
I think most all of the brand new units are good.
the new bushnell looks cool with the weather overlay but I bet it'll eat up batteries!

Well,  I went out and bought the eTrex H and I think it will be just fine for what, I want to do with it.  Thanks for all the input.
