I need to replace my arrow rest.  This is the 1st time of doing this my self.  I bought the bow already set up.  

Once I remove the old one, do I glue the new one on top of the any existing glue?  If not, what can I use to clean up any glue before putting down the new rest?

Also, is there any specific type of glue that is better than the others?

Take the old glue off. Goo Gone works good for this, you can get it at Wal-mart. I use Barge Cement to glue the new one on. 3 Rivers sells that.

You will have better results removing the old glue. Acetone has worked well for me just be careful not to get crazy and damage the finish around that area. The rests I used came with adhesive already on them, but it has been awhile since I used one.

Coop  Thats what I was worried about.  Not damaging the bow finish.  I guess just use sparringly and I should be ok.   Thanks guys!!

if you don't want to go the route of solvents, you might be able to rub it off with your finger.  I have also used white drafting erasers...

I've even tried hot veg oil and rubbed it right off.

If you use the acetone sparingly (like on a old cotton rag) it will be fine, then use barge cement if you are not using pre-glued rest material, whatever you use, make sure you wipe it down a little with alchohol or acetone just to remove all the oils for a good clean long lasting glue up.

I'd stay away from acetone.  That's strong stuff.  If a contact/barge cement was used with the old rest, rubbing with your finger will likely get it off.  Denatured alcohol will loosen it as well, but I recommend staying away from the solvents.  Get a little on a part of the bow that you don't want it, and if you don't see it or forget to wipe it off almost immediately, it will loosen the finish.

I know that rubbing alcohol will not ruin the finish.. I've used it and alot of rubbing    on a truckload of bows over the years.

If your replacing with a rug rest buy on that has adhesive backing...
