I am in dale oklahoma that is just west of shawnee

huntinut250

Yea mangum is just N.E. of Altus in Greer county.
Moved us out there this weekend and will be driving quite a bit for my job for a while.  Hope to get to know the area and find a place to hunt.  May end up at Sandy Sanders WMA for a while.  Just hoping to get some info on the area.

I'm in Cheyenne, Roger Mills County.  Even farther west than Dewey Co.  I'm about 55 miles north of Mangum.   :wavey:

Russell, how was Leedey the last time you came back?

I was stationed at Altus for 7 years and did quite a bit of hunting there.  From Mangum you are very close to Lake Altus and it has quite a bit of public hunting there.  Got my first deer with a bow there.  You also have public land at Tom Stead resivoir.  About an hours drive away is Black Kettle and it is a huge public land area.  I hunted and camped there a week at a time.  Out of all of them I probably hunted Lake Altus more.

All of the areas I have mentioned have deer, turkey and cotton tail rabbits.  I even saw a badger out at lake Altus once.

Yea, there is quite a bit of land there just haven't had a chance yet to look around.  I here the hunting is good.  Have high hopes just need a little time to see.

huntinut250

bodark,  I am looking forward to getting up your way also.  I have always wanted to come up to Cheyenne to do some turkey hunting in the spring just a long way from durant.  Especially when there is so many places to hunt down here. I quess i wont have any excuses now though will I.

BodarkOkie

If you want to hunt deer here, you have to knock the turkeys out of the way so you won't trip over them.
And...that is not much of an exaggeration.  But don't tell everyone...they'll all want to hunt here.   ;)

Pac's post mentions the Black Kettle National Grasslands.  About 34,000 acres of that is in Roger Mills County.

If looked at it on the WMA maps and it looks kinda hard to navigate especially as broken up as it is. Is as hard to locate the areas as it appears on the maps?

When I hunted Black Kettle there were small signs with area numbers on it.  That hepled me figure out where I was in relation to the map.  I don't know if they still use those little signs since the last time I was there was 1999.

Lake Altus public land was fairly easy to navigate.  There was a 4 strand fence on the border on the side that I hunted and as long as you didn't cross it you were good to go.

Gene,
Leedey has pretty much been holding the same for quite a few years. Got a few businesses holding on down the main street and people just farming and getting by. If you are familiar with the area my family's place is west of camargo along the river. My extended family is all over that area, especially Leedey.
I like this thread....been missing OK and I'll be headed back before thanksgiving to see what I can see.
You are right about the turkeys where I go too.
sssshhhh.

Russell,

I know many of your family members. They are good friends and good people. I live in OKC.

'preciate it Allan. Unfortunately I don't get to spend enough time there anymore but I love the time I do go. Funny we still refer to Leedey as "out west" because I grew up mostly around Kingfisher. I live in Oregon and call dewey county "out west"...figure that one out.
People here think it's funny that I miss things about Oklahoma too. I guess beauty is in the eye of beholder. I love Oregon and it is more striking and I love the mountains but I can wonder our land in Oklahoma just as long...and i don't get as lost.

I'm in Cheyenne, Roger Mills County also.  Just a little north of Gene.

Greg

BodarkOkie

Hi Greg.... about six blocks north...long time, no see. LOL

Oregon Okie - Cheyenne is about the same as Leedey...lots of buildings left, but fewer people.

I don't hunt much in the Black Kettle Nat'l Grasslands, but there are maps available that makes finding the areas fairly simple.
