I was stringing my longbow up the other day when I had it in a full bend and was leaning down to hook the loop up the top protion of my stringer slipped off. The crack was so loud against the side of my face that I honestly thought the upper limb had broken. I blacked out for a second or two but managed to stay on my feet. I now sport a bruise in the shape of a longbow limb from the top of my temple to my jawline.  :knothead:   OOPS!!!!!!

What kind of stringer do you use?

Glad you are okay, that isn't a fun experience.  As others have asked, what type of stringer was that?  I don't think it can happen with a Selway, and that is why i like/use them....

Glad your'e ok. Get you a selway stringer and you won't have to worry about that again.

I have had close calls with the narrow little rubber "cup style", it slides a little sideways.

I ended up with an archaic Bob Lee stringer I got years ago, with my take down recurve.

it has a nylon loop, covered with shring tubing, and in my mind much more reliable than the little rubber nubbin...

Sorry I didn't express my concerns for your well being. I sure was concerned thought! I've heard horror stories! It's bad enough when we get hurt shooting our bows without getting hurt just stringing our bows. I hope you feel better soon and...I'm at a loss for words.

Those type stringers scare me.  I only use the selway.

b.glass

Hey Killdeer! If my niece can't go with me, would you be interested in going to Illinois to deer hunt the first week of Oct. with Bernie Swank of Mystklongbows?

I've had the srtinger for years now. Its never given me any problems at all until a few days ago. I don't know who makes it but its just a string with two leather pouches on each end. One pouch is smaller than the other to allow you to slip the string on. Thats the one that slipped off. I don't have any pictures but it still stings a little when I lean my head on my hand. I guess its just a hard taught lesson.

I had one of those. I gave it to my worst enemy. Oops...I gave it to my husband.    I just bought two more Selways at ATAR.

Bona, I would love to, but current circumstances have me wondering if I will be able to hunt at all. Oy. I think we would get along famously!

Curveman

I've heard those little cup stringers are the best for maintaining an even tension on both the limbs. I have also heard that the rubber block can slip and ruin the finish on the limb. That being said I use both!   :)   My bows are pretty but used for hunting so I don't mind the little nics etc.-adds character to a bow. Like that mark Dozer-gives your face a tough look, no?    :bigsmyl:   Seriously, I shouldn't joke and wouldn't of course if you'd been badly hurt. I am glad you shared this-we all need a reminder to be careful!

Well said curveman. Everyone, take care! I made that type stringer for someone because I like mine so well but noticed that the string was slipping in the knot, (must have been a slip knot), I don't know my knots well enough. The next time used it would have come undone and may have been a similar incident.
Killy, sorry, I forgot about your circumstances. Thanks for considering.

Hope your ok...

I'm fine now. I have five different scares on my head and those are just the ones that needed stitches or staples so I guess you could say I'm used to it. Just a lesson on what could happen when you rush something as simple as stringing a bow. I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.
