Dumb wood arrow?

Sorry about the dumb question, but here it goes. What will happen if you shoot a wood arrow that isnt perfectly straight? Wobbly arrow flight?

How straight is perfectly straight? All wood arrows will have some degree of runout. Usually, this is of little consequence. If you can see it, straighten it. Otherwise, just let fly.

As long as the point spins true to the nock, your arrow can have some bends and still hit the bull. I am reminded of a whimsically crooked arrow that PatB gave to Bernie. The two ends spun in the same axis, so that even though it was visibly crooked, it flew true.

Killdeer,

I noticed that there was a little bend in one of my hickory shafts last night, I shot it and noticed that it "kicked" alot more. I never noticed it before now.

Just gently straighten it over the heel of your hand, watch your release, and it should behave. Wooden arrows need looking at here and there to maintain straightness (and confidence!).

What Killy said. Maybe Bernie will post a pic of that snaky arrow.
I use mostly hardwood shoots or cane for arrows and there isn't a straight one in the bunch. As long as the nock and point spin in the same plane they usually fly true. As a novelty the arrow I gave Bernie shoots well and gets lots of looks at the practice line but I would not hunt with it. The crooks would impede penetration.     Pat

i use heavy lw helical on my woodies to help out.be more aware of cracks.they will come apart on you when you shoot.especially if you hit some thing hard

frassetter, you probably won't notice it unless the arrow is pretty bad crooked. I once deliberately warped my hunting arrows badly with 160 grain Snuffers on them, to see what effect it had. I was paranoid about my arrow being a little crooked when I was hunting. When I shot the 20 yard target, they kind of looped through the air, but hit where I was looking. After that I quit worrying.

Wood arrows can be more crooked and still be accurate than tubular arrows can, because a larger part of the mass of the cross section is nearer the center with wood. I think the operative term is "rotating center of mass".

Nevertheless I want my hunting arrows to be perfectly straight for the sake of penetration.

From the thread title, I thought this was a question about a wood arrow with less than average intelligence.   :biglaugh:

No, it is about an arrow incapable of speech...as in "dumb as a post".

Hmm, this post is dumb, as a post, too.

I had a stupid arrow once... no matter what I tried it didn't want to be a part of the group with all its other arrow friends.... well except in the quiver  :knothead:   The only thing I could figure is that it had possibly a defect on the inside..  Anyway I culled it from the pack and gave it to someone else   :D

Killdeer

I have a quiver full of those...  "[dntthnk]"
