What kind of tent did Fred Bear use in "The Oldest Game"?Where can I find that style of tent? Also, any info on the tent would help.

VTer

I believe its a Baker style tent. Tentsmith out of NH makes them. That's my favorite Fred Bear video just for that reason, the cool camping out.

Rob, you may also want to check out the Panther Primitives website.  Mike Yancey @ Pine Hollow Longbows (sponsor) is a dealer.  Really great tents, you can custom order what you want, and delivery is pretty good.  I just ordered a tent from Mike and I'm real pleased with it.

Its a Whelan lean to design that Bear modified with the traverse pole in the rear. Google up the design and you'll find many variations still available. Mr. Bear built this one back in the thirties. Grant

VTer is right, It's a Baker style leanto. They make a nice camp, and with a back log fire in front, will stay warm at night, if it's needed.  :campfire:    :archer:

" Bakers" are best suited for those folks looking for a traditional NORTHEAST late 19th Century canoeing tent or just someplace that they can sit in and be dry while they admire their fire.
Of course, 10,000 traditional no-see-ums are also warm and dry while they feast on your flesh if you camp in the SOUTHEAST or any place with chiggers, skeeters, or black flies.
This is why traditional no-see-um mesh became traditional.

So, is it a Whelan or a Baker ?

VTer

I just rewatched The Oldest Game, Grant is right, it's a Whelan. The baker and whelan were very similar. The side walls are the main difference. The bakers side walls are perpendiclar to the back whereas the whelans are at an angle. Tentsmith has them both.

VTer- I found a site for Panther Tents, a company that specializes in period repros and they have a really nice Whelen repro. Another difference between the Whelan (or Whelen) and the Baker is the short rear wall of the Baker. The Whelen slopes to the ground at a continuous angle. I think that's why Mr. Bear added the traverse pole to his; it created a little more head room in the very rear portion. I'm gonna check out Tentsmith now, thanks.      Grant
