Barry, thanks.  That's exactly the type of input I was looking for.  That scenerio makes perfect sense when you think about it. Now I've just gotta do some thinking about what happens in the same situation as you described, except where all of the terrain is level, meaning that the security cover is at the same plane as the crop fields as often occurs when there is a riverbottom or drainage.  In this situation it seems that dethermalization will not be a factor, but a big buck could still enter a field with the wind at his back if he were indeed able to use other deer in the herd as a decoy.
