Another of my shots in the dark. Does anyone know anything about Redheart wood from Mexico? I thought I was settled on African Padauk, but I ran across this wood and it caught my eye. Here's a link to see what it looks like. I hope I'm not breaking any rules here.

I use quite a bit for knife handles. Very nice to work with but burns easily if you powersand it. Very subtle grain pattern in some pieces. Darkens to a lovely rich Mahogany colour with age.

Any help?

I LOVE the way smells when you work with it! It almost has a fruity arouma.

It doesnt have a nice grain, its just has a nice color.

The color is what I'm looking for, not the grain. If it has a grain, it's an added bonus. The down side is when some woods age, they take on a different color. I'd like a wood that retains it's original color and doesn't go from red to brown. Another wood I like is Tulipwood. Found tulipwood on the Trad Gang site by looking at someone's Black Widow photo. You know, some of you guys on here, with your beautiful wood bows, are a bad influence.   ;)

From what I have read, padauk does darken with age. I'm going to have Bill Howland of Brackenbury Bows build me a 68" Legend T/D recurve and he told me to pick out the woods I like. Padauk is one of my choices along with Tulipwood and maybe now, Redheart. I can't find very much information on redheart though. If I can't really decide, I'll let Bill make the choice for me.   ;)

Trux Turning

Padauk will darked to a dark brown red color-red heart darkens some but stays more of a red color over time- if you are wanting red go with blood wood.

Trux Turning

Padauk will "darken" --red heart and blood wood both have tighter grain patterns compaired to padauk

Shawn Leonard

Redheart get pretty dark over time, if ya want to retain some red Trux is correct, Bloodwood will stay redder. Shawn

I agree with Trux as well. If you're looking for red Bloodwood is the way to go.
Redhart will turn almost to a brown if it doesn't have a UV inhibitor finish on it.
Hope that helps
