I guess I've been in a time warp...making my wooden arrows, using Zwickey and Magnus broadheads I bought a bunch of 8 years ago.

For some reason, I got the Cabelas Archery Catalog in the mail, though I've never ordered anything from them.

Carbon hunting arrows...$185 a dozen and broadheads $160 a dozen. WOW!!! and WOW again!!!

Jason R. Wesbrock

I use Beman ICS shafts that are around $40/dozen and Ace Standard that cost $18.99 for six. They kill things just fine.   ;)

Lonesome Wind

I shoot self made ash and El' Grande Grizzlies, turkey fletch. I've got about $60 a dozen and quite a bit of time. I kinda shun most stuff other people have made.

I was just surprised at the prices on certain arrows and broadheads. You would have over 30 bucks an arrow.

$360 or more for a dozen arrows. I don't see anyone stump shooting with those arrows! :^)

i lost 2 carbon arrows the other day.  i just am tired to paying that much. so now i am making myself learn the wood arrow trade.   time is something i have plenty of so making them is kinda fun,  and a heck of a lot cjeaper

Beaver, I hate to tell you, but you can lose woodies too.   :)

When I'm not shooting a target in my yard (with a cleared area behind it), there's a judo on the tip. Judo arrows are just about impossible to lose!

What kind of arrows are you finding for $360 dz? You can get Gold Tips and Carbon Express from $40 to $60 dz for shafts. They are both super tough shafts that rarely break!

SR,

I was adding up the $185 a dozen for the shafts, add the $160 for the broadheads, then fletching, etc. That would get you close to the $360 mark.

Silver Flame broadheads are over $50 for 3. That makes them over $200 for 12. That's over $385 just for the shafts and broadheads.

I will look in the Cabelas catalog again for the name of the hunting carbons that were $185 a dozen.

I share your shock on how much can be spent on completed arrows. For instance, Grizzly Stiks at $70 for 6 and Silver Flames at $90 for 3 would result in $500 per dozen - and you would still have to pay (time and/or money) for feathers and finishing. Please note that I am not knocking the shafts or the heads as I want at least a dozen Grizzly's carrying Silver Flames - but - like everything else choices have to be made.

For me - the point about getting great arrows and heads for much less is on target (forgive the pun). Without much effort, I believe you can build great arrows for around $6 apiece. As losing (or breaking) a $6 arrow stings - I have trouble imagining imagine what it would be to lose one costing upwards of $3O would be like.

Have you bought any firearm ammo lately?  I've seen handgun ammo going for more than a dollar per round and when you fire it all you have left is the case.  Makes a (usually) re-useable arrow look cheap.  I'd forget Cabella's and buy from 3-Rivers or one of the other archery suppliers.  Last time I looked I could order a dozen CE's fletched and ready to tune for $110 plus shipping.  All you need to add is the tips.  I call that a bargain compared to a lot of other things today.

Life is an adventure.  Don't miss it.

Who needs a doz Silverflame tipped arrows?
If you want them, buy them.
If you can't afford them or are unwilling to spend the money, find a more economical alternative.

Can't compare the quality and cost of a SF to an unsharpened Zwicky or Magnus. Both will work

Same with arrows - can't compare (example)an ACC to a GT basic hunter. Again, both will work.

Also - how much if anything costs the same as 8 years ago?

Beaver, another thing to consider is the durability of carbons. As mentioned ya can lose wood as well, but carbons hold up to much more abuse. I used to shoot woodies and I would go through at least 4-5 dozen a year stump shooting and hunting. I went to carbons about 5 years ago and still have a few arrows left from my original dozen. Oh, to address the original topic I agree with SteveB, shoot what ya want. I know I shoot Heritage 150s with 150 grain Snuffers. I can do a dozen for with BHs for $110 and they will last me a few years easily, that is cheap really! Shawn

I'm shooting a $40 broadhead on a $4 woodie with a homemade feather.I'm all screwed up  :D
Aim down your arrow because thats where it's going.

I think the shaft you're talking about Is the Carbon Express ARAMID...saw some in a shop the other day $185/dozen   :scared:   . ITs got kevlar in it. I think you can just wave it at a deer and they will fall over dead...   :saywhat:

I wasn't slamming anyones choices. I hadn't looked at current prices for arrows and broadheads and was a little shocked at what you can spend, if your pockets are deep.

Widowbender was right...they were Carbon Express ARAMIDs at $185 a dozen.

Thanks to all who responded!
