I was going through some of my old VHS tapes the other day and found this video of my hog hunt from 1995. I edited out my buddy's hunt because that's not Trad related.

We picked Clarkrange Hunting Lodge (   http://www.kenmoody.com/?page_id=2   )because of the Dan Fitzgerald videos.  We ran after those dogs half of the morning before I was able to get a pig beyed for a shot.
This was the first and last time I ever hunted with dogs.

Just goes to show the amazing effect adrenaline can have on animals - shoot the same pig in the same way through stalking or ambush, and he most likely would've been down and out much sooner.

I worked at lodge in SC hunting hogs with dogs. It was fun as I like to hunt with dogs - not so much the thrill of the hunt or stalking in close to unwary game that is tops BUT it has its place. I imagine a couple dogs got cut by the BH in that one. I have seen it before. But as BEn said that hog had adrenaline kickin and even with a perfect hit like that he is gonna fight some more before going down.

Though I worked at a place I only ever killed one hog with dogs. Been in on MANY more and can tell some good stories. I guess listening to a good run is what gets me.

I reckon I understand too Carl. I can say this though, those dogs meant business and that hog sure was tenacious.

That's not something I ever care to do.  I prefer to hunt them.  Don't fault those who enjoy this, but it ain't for me.

Different strokes for different folks Apex, but I agree to an extent. I think there is a place for both with and without dogs. If it were me in close cover I'd like a few dogs around to distract the dogs a bit more than focusing on me. I too would prefer to stalk and hunt if the terrain wasn't so thick you'd step on them like a rabbit. You gotta love dogs that dedicated. I've never hunted hogs but it's on my short list of hunts I'd like to do. But hey was a good video and was darn good shot placement.

I have hunted over dogs one time, shot the largest hog to date that way!  It was exciting, took a lot out of me chasing dogs, and being able to shoot as the hog charged me!!

Having done it once, I would recommend it for everyone at least once, but I don't see myself hunting that way again.  I feel qualified to make that statement cause I have sampled it.  I know a lot of guys who love it.  Just not my cup of tea.....but I find no fault in it.

What was the deal with the guy kicking those dogs? I know you have to get them to lay off the hog but it seems he was a little rough towards the middle of the video. You can tell by the black dogs reaction on the left side, almost off camera.

i thought the same abou the handler of the dogs.  i just had to turn it off.,,  made a real good shot  on the hog, i was surprised to see it stay up so long

I wouldn't worry to much about the dog getting kicked, those are not the family pet. Hog dogs are tougher then nails. Be more worried about one running up on a shape broadhead sticking out of the side of the pig.

I've hunted hogs with dogs many times. I'll tell you, it's not for the faint of heart. It is however, a wonderful experience and I would suggest it to anybody who asks about it.

If those were my dogs,....... I'd kick them any day of the week and twice on Sunday if it meant my boot was going to save them from the fury of those tusks or a sharp broad head. Hog dogs have to be ruthless if they plan on surviving very long....... A nice, gentle hog dog has a short shelf life, I promis. That doesn't mean they aren't nice and gentle with humans. They are not pets, they are tools unlike a good bird dog or rabbit hound, and I guarantee they love what they do, but a person can't get too attached to one because the chances of it living a full, healthy life are slim. It's harsh, but it's life as a hog dog.

A huge mountain lion, or a 400lb bear has nothing on a boar when it comes down to a fight with dogs.

I loved your video. People who have never done it have a hard time understanding what all is involved.
