I'm getting a little bored shooting at my target and have been wondering what kind of tips are best for stump-shooting practice?

What are you all using?
All truly great thoughts are  conceived while walking.

I prefer the one that finds the exact target...
I mean bludgeons cut 'Tarantula' style..

Tarantula? Where did that name come from??

That looks just like the old Bludgeon that is notched to fit the "Claw" from the old "Tiger Claw" small game head. I thought this was then called a "Bludgeon Claw". The old "Tiger Claw" head looks like an odd blunt which is threaded on the end to accept a machine screw. A metal "Claw" fits over the blunt head and is held by the screw. You remove the screw and "Claw" and slip a Bludgeon over the top. The "Bludgeon" is made for the "Claw" to fit perfectly on the top when you cut the notches out. You drill out the dimple in the center of the "Bludgeon" which allows a slightly longer machine screw to be used to secure the "Claw". Presto, you have a "Bludgeon Claw".

Very effective when you take into account the diameter of the Bludgeon along w/ the blades of the "Claw" and the edge of the center machine screw. Turns a mild rabbit head into a hardcore unloseable Eastern gray squirrel killer.

Really rotten stumps make the best targets.....
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

I like useing Judos for stump shooting. I have never lost an arrow with a judo on it.

Make sure you read your game laws and find out when "stumps" are in season.   :bigsmyl:    :bigsmyl:    :bigsmyl:

I only use Judos and Hex Heads. They're great and are as tough as nails!  :D

I like to use Ace Hex Heads. Not only are the great for stump-shooting, but excellent for small game as well. And they come in weights from 85 to 200 grains.

Judos, Slide a Scorpio behind your field point or small washer. Anything to help prevent the arrow from burying itself.

Your targets should be anything, stumps, leaves, clumps of grass, a small limb. Just use your imagination and make sure all your shots are at unknown distances. Practice from a kneeling position or sitting really helps, especially when turkey hunting using natural cover.

I used to use judos, but went to hex heads. I break far fewer arrows and it is more like shooting a field point when threading through "stuff".

And yes, I have learned to gauge the rottenness of a stump pretty well!

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

like to carry a pair of pliers and and old screw driver t dig out arrows shot in solid stumps. also some flagging to make lost arrows. i come back later and find most.

Judo's, hex heads, rubber blunts, and steel/brass blunts all do the job; my money's on the judo's however...

I will also give ya another twist! Go to the area you are gonna stump shoot and leave your bow in a spot, than walk a big loop take a big bag of balloons and set them out as ya go, 20,30,40 yards apart. Try and set them up so when ya pick up the arrows and the broken balloon ya can shoot at the next one within a few steps. When done pick up your bow and go hunt the balloons. It is great fun and the nice thing is a whole bag of 15-20 balloons goes right back in your pocket when ya break them all. I have even set 5 or six out around one of my old deerstands and than climb in and break them. I agree stump shooting is fun, but I sometimes have trouble picking good targets and break lots of arrows. Balloons you pick the spot and the back drop. Have Fun! Shawn

I use brass (.357) blunts. I also use bright feathers and paint the top 10" of my arrows flour. orange. Makes it a lot easier to find your arrows. Ditto on the shooting of really rotten stumps. Have fun.
