Buying any bow without shooting it and getting a good take for it's feel and shooting characteristics is like marrying a mail order bride...you might get lucky. If you feel lucky, I would suggest buying a lottery ticket and forget an untried bow. (A bit over-the-top but very true.)

I have had several bows built for me in the past. I won't buy a bow now that I can't shoot first.

Well alot of good opinions here.....
To those that say shoot as many as possible before buying? That is sound advise, but difficult way over here in New Brunswick Canada.

Very few Canadian bowyers and even less within range of me. I may have to attend a Trad shoot or two this summer, and beg some shooters to try their bows. There are very few gatherings here as well. I think there may be one in Ontario, correct me if I'm wrong guys. That is still aways away.

Well carefully spent bucks on a decent used bow may be the only way for now to try one...if it don't fit, I can always sell it right?

What type of grip do ya like? That will really determine the bow ya want. RER makes great bows and Kevin will really work with ya on a grip ya want, more so than a lot of bowyers. I olove my RER bows. Shawn

What about a Widow?  If new is too expensive, look for a used one and if needed, get it refinished, it'll be like new.

Sounds like you've got it... two steps in the right direction.  The only flaw in buying used bows is making yourself sell them!  I hear too many stories about "wishin' I never sold that one" that I can't let any of mine go!  Find a trad shoot and you'll find a bunch of good people that'll gladly let you give their bow a try.  Good luck in your search!

I know Chek-mate has been mentioned. I beleive I have shot most the Chek-mate model bows and I would put the Crusader in a league by itself as far as Chek-mate. That bow shoots as good or better than any I own.  Just my opinion.

The Ghost is the only one I've experienced, and it was downright spooky how well it shoots.  My all time favorite recurve, so far.

I'm afraid even used widows are too costly for me.
I'm looking for between 3-400.00 maybe a bit more, but that's it with my budget!

EASTERNARCHER, of the 5 you list at the top of your thread, I like the Kota Kill-Um recurve. Amazing draw for a 60" recurve. At the very least, why don't you call Tim Finley on the phone and talk to him. Bob

Why not check out a JK Kanati ? You will save yourself a lot of money.

Ratgunner, KAnati bows? can't say I've heard of them.....

I paid 450 plus shipping for my Kota Kill-um and I'm shooting it very well.

Bacote with Birds-eye maple limbs.

 

 

I'm looking at getting another one around 55-57 lbs this fall or early next spring.
