Working on an osage longbow...up to brace height and ready to start freeing the with within.

John Scifres

Y'all are a buncha whiners.  I mean come on, I have three kids and there has been maybe 2 days in the last 3 weeks where we have not had multiple events.  One evening last week we had 5 events for 3 kids  :)   Thank God school is out on Wednesday and Musical, Choir(s), band, soccer and track are also done.

Somehow I managed to get my trade bow tillered to 24" between church and a choir show yesterday.  I have free nights almost all week and should get her done soon.  I'll post some pics as I go.
Take a kid hunting!

Careful John.  I just may have to "help" you with your bow while I'm out there this weekend.    :saywhat:

And thanks for the kind words Bona.  This year I think I'll go for a pacific northwest flavor.  Namely vine maple for the stave and maybe sturgeon skin for a backing.  I'm not sure about that part yet.

I'm glad to say that I'm just sitting back with an empty porch that is ready for a package to grace its steps.  Looking good guys!  I'll be waiting!

Well one bow received and another shipped. I am tracking 3 bows in the mail. We are 29% complete.

Thanks all I hope it turns out now. I am waiting on it to re-hydrate after this lasting to get the twist out. The tips are better aligned.

Hi all,

Just an update where I'm at right now on the swap bow. Since the swapo started I moved 400miles and started a new job. I had a few mishaps early in the game, had one blow up on me, had a 54" hickory R/D bow come out with a bad glue line in the riser, and never really looked very good. Accidentally gouged into a hickory backed camaru stave pretty bad and turned it into a 35#er (maybe another hickory backing lam will save it at a later date). Anyway now I'm onto whatever number attempt that makes, with alot more caution and with the draw knife (read culprit) remaining on the table and out of my hands.
The bow I'm working on now is a hickory backed maple board bow with laminated hickory handle and tip overlays. Will have a handle cut in a semi- hill style. Very light figurin in the maple should be pretty, under stain and oil finish.
Haven't cut the stave down from 72" yet but I will and it'll probably end up at 66" or so, basically pyrimidal shape. If I can make it as I have imagined it I think *** will be happy with it. Hopefully all goes well, should have it wrapped up within the next week or 2. Will post pics as soon as I can. Wish me luck!

Good Luck Little Ben.  I know what you're going through, it took me 4 tries to get a shooter that was worthy to ship....Dan

Dan, did you ever make out turkey hunting? I only had the chance to go one weekend and it was a blast but no shots on a turkey... Hopefully in the fall.

Ralph, been out 5 times so far, seen one hen.  The weather has not been very cooperative, rain or extremely warm for this time of the year.  Only heard a few faint gobbles and they were on private groung where I can't get to them.  I plan on hunting this weekend, (the end of the season) maybe the call you sent with the bow will bring one in for me....Dan

A bow arrived in the mail for me today!   A character Osage with jute/linen handle wrap (?) and backed with (not 100% sure).  The bow is named "Winding Road" and is a therapy bow; made a bit light for my hurt shoulder (luckily I'm back to normal...although my wife may say I was never quite normal). Thanks Vince (VA)! Looking forward to flinging some arrows!  VInce, please send me some details on the bow).

Trying to keep up, but with my new job it's hard. Here are a few pictures. The bow is 65 1/2 nTn and right now is 62# @ 20".

I've flipped the tips and shot 50+ arrows at 20" the arrows are 620gr. ash with a 160 gr. point for a total of 780 grains.

Here are the pics:

Well here she is. I had a bamboo backed Hornbeam built for the swap but there was a little crack in the bamboo and it splintered like crap. I decided to go with a self bow specs are 64" ntn. just under 50lbs. Hornbeam with bone nocks and purple heart handle. Sorry for the bad pics.
