Any of you tradgangers spend any time in that zone? I've been sort of locked into CO for several years and feeling the itch to see new territory. Yeah,I know the wolves have eaten all the Idaho elk but maybe I can find a survivor. What about"griz"? Any in those areas? Anyone have any pics of the terrain in that area? CABIN FEVER IS UPON ME-turkey season is still 3 weeks away!!

I hunted that area for years.  A big winter kill a few years back and the high predidation rate have made these units more challenging.  I've moved on to other pastures.  But I can give you some tips if you want to talk about it on the phone or PM.  Just not on the public forum.  LOL

I have researched these also.  numbers are way down but the interesting point, 6 pt and better bulls are the NORM.

I hunted 12-4 for moose last year. I hunted in 3 day stretches every two weeks for almost 3 months. Only once did I see elk tracks, 3 or 4 head crossed the road. Never saw a harvested elk. Moose was worse, only saw a cow and calf with no other sign. If you are locked into those two units, I would spend my time researching 10.
Many more elk in Units 4 or 1 where I live. However, having hunted Colorado, you may find it too brushy for your liking.  Mike

There has always been something intriguing about hunting the Bitteroots for me--I just need to get over it, I guess. Age has a way of creeping up real quick and those things you dreamed about doing are starting to look like just dreams. I planned on being on the Dalton Hwy.chasing caribou the first year it opened up to the public --hmm --think I waited too late for that one too,pretty crowded now....... Thanks for the replies.

Good looking country and I did find some elk, but they definately weren't there in large numbers.

I hunted unit 15 for a couple of years.  Looks just like the pics Steven posted there.  Pretty thick region, elk are there but spread out.  Lots of wolves, black bear, turkey and deer.  Never seen evidence of grizzly but I wouldn't be suprised if they were up there.  Good area for stalking and getting in close. dino

I've hunted unit 10 since about 1990.  Good hunting for those who learned the unit when elk numbers were high and now don't mind going days at a time without encountering an elk.  It's a terrible place to try to learn now, though. You won't have many encounters with elk, so telling "right" from "wrong" is pretty tough.

You know I forgot but Ted at Raptor is a guide in that Unit.  I talked to him earlier today and he said to give him a call and he'd help put you in the right direction.
