I do most of my hunting from a treestand.  I am thinking about getting a back quiver.  Who makes some of the best?  I am new to traditional, so does a back quiver make sense?  I'll be taking it off and hanging it.  Should I consider an attachable?  How much does it effect your shooting.  I've never left the quiver on when hunting with a compound...just opens my groups up too much.

All personal choice. So many styles to choose from.
I as most keep a bow quiver that attaches to the bow and shoot with it on all the time including from treet stands or blinds. Besdies I like the feel of the added weight with the bow quiver loaded with arrows on my longbow. If you don't like a bow quiver, Cat quivers are nice also. Usually have a small loop on top to hang nice and straight from a tree.

I use a back quiver mainly to practice, shoot 3D and small game hunting for extra arrows.

Most compound shoters keep it off all year and expect the bow to shoot the same when they put it on. As you are aware it doesn't work like that.
Funny how when in almost any range I've been in during non hunting season's, it's acceptable for trad guys to have a quiver on the bow and compound are not.

When I hunt I carry both I have all my blunt points just in case there is a bunny or squirrel needen some shooting at!in the back quiver and I use a 3 arrow quiver on the bow for the broad heads. the set up has added some weight to the bow BUT it sure quieted it a lot and now after year and half I am very accustomed to it It feels weird to shot a bow with out it but the bow mounted quiver is very small it will only hold 3 arrows.

my two favorite back quivers are both sold by black widow - the safari and the jumbo latigo leather model.  shoulder quivers do require some practice in order to draw your arrows quickly and quietly.  one of the main questions is, how long are you willing to wait?  custom leather quivers can take 1-4 months.  also, the quiver height is a major factor - for me anyway.  they come anywhere from 17"- 24".  too short and your arrows are more likely to fall out, too long and drawing an arrow smoothly becomes more difficult. 21"-22" works best for me - i'm 6'3".  hope this helps.

If you want a back quiver I would contact Shell, Mike G, or one of the other sponsors here on Trad Gang. They all make great quivers.

Personally I use a EFA bow quiver for big game hunting most of the time. There are times when I will carry a Cat Quiver as well. The EFA has not effected my groups at all. They are small and super light.

Use a back quiver for 3D, and small game.

The great thing is there are so many options and lots of great sponsors to help you out.

Deer hunting, I usually carry a GFA quiver. Very versatile, and easy enough to take off to hang in a tree.

Mike G is the handle for the great fella that owns Mike's Archery Leather.

Mike G is very good. I recently got an arm guard from him and the leather is excellent along with the workmanship.

Steven Catts "The Leathersmith" His work is the best I've found. Here's a pic of mine. I added the beaver fur afterwards. The design is amazing! The only thing on this quiver that isn't leather is the antler button on the flap. Everything else and I mean everything is leather. Stitching (lacing) and all.

 

Shell made this one for me, there is a knife sheath built into the pocket.

 

I don't hunt with it though.. a side quiver (ala gfa type) is the best I've found.  I use this one.  It just slides through the brush effortlessly.

 

Thanks for all the great replies!  I guess I will initially try one on the quiver for bowhunting. It seems to make the most sense. If I don't like it, I am going to order  a custom back model from one of our sponsers.  Now I have to add a new topic on which is the best bow quiver.  Honestly, you guys are great to put up with us newbies.

I also use a back quiver from Mike, and a Thunderhorn Boa Small Fry.

 

Don't have a pic of the Thunderhorn, but you can Google them up right quick. If your bow had bushings in it, I would recommend a Quickee Kwik 3.

Have you looked at the Catquivers? Some guys like them. Some don't. I use a Catquiver II for hunting. It has enough room to store most of what I carry in the field. All my gear is in one place and ready when I am.
I also have a beautiful leather back quiver made by Shell. I use it at the range but don't hunt with it.

I don't like the back quiver for stand hunting.  It takes too much motion to get a second arrow out.  If you don't miss the first time or don't want an opprotunity at a second animal this is no big deal.  I am going to do a small bow quiver like a 3 arrow efa or solo stalker.  I will carry my back quiver with judo's and a few extra broadhead arrows.  I also thought about trying a GFA quiver.

Either the Catquiver 3.5 in fleece or a Dave Creger leather backquiver.
