Platte Falls is a possibility but weather conditions could vary heavily at this time of year. The way the poll is turning out right now it looks like Saturday afternoons are the best time for most people.

The only reason I picked the Cabela's location is because I thought it was fairly centrally located for people coming from all directions and we could have a place inside but, I am cool with whatever the group wants to do.

I have sent a personal message to a lot of the people on the list above and I would like to give them until Friday 2/15/08 to respond. After that I think we should set a date and time to meet.

I stopped by Cabela's tonight and talked to the evening restaurant manager and asked about holding our meeting in their food court area and this is what he told me.

There shouldn't be any problem with us using the food court area to meet in but he can't guarantee that there will be enough space for us because it is a public area. There isn't a problem with pulling some tables together so that we can sit as a group but it will be up to us to figure out and setup the seating arrangement. We will be required to purchase something from their restaurant if we are going to occupy space in it.

I also talk to him about the banquet rooms. The small rooms seat 40 people and cost $75 a day. They will set the room up for us. We do not have to purchase any food if we don't want to but if you want, food and drinks are just a few feet away.

I also talked with the archery department manager to see if we can use their indoor range if we want to shoot afterwards. He said he would not have a problem with us using the range if his department isn't using it to service their customers. This is not a big range 10 yards max but we can fling some arrows if we want. The other options are to go somewhere after the meeting and shoot. Shawnee Mission Park has a range and (as mentioned earlier) Platte Falls has a range. I believe Shawnee Mission Park has a fee to shoot at their range. I am not sure of the price but it use to be a license that is good for one year. If you are caught with out the license there will be a fine. I don't think Platte Falls charges a fee.

Here are some pictures of the banquet room that seats 40. If we can get 15 people to commit it will cost $5 each to rent a room.

JMO, I wouldn't mind coughing up the $5 to rent the room, we could order our food out in the restaurant...if we're meeting on the weekend, the food area might be a little busier.  Also, once in a while a tour bus comes in and floods the restaurant...

Just a reminder to the Kansas archers the KBA is on the weekend of Feb 22nd, 23rd and 24th. It is being held in Hutchinson again and I believe Mike from the Nocking point will be tied up there. Most of the people there will be tradional shooters. Glenn

Well, while I'd love to go to Plate Falls Conservation area for the get together, I have to agree that Cabellas is probably more centrally located as already stated and weather won't be an issue either.

Of course, it sure would be nice to be able to shoot someplace other than the cabellas "hallway" range.  It's really small and narrow and I don't think more than two people could shoot at a time and I think I'd propably not want to bother with trying to bring my bow and arrows into the store during business hours.

We're all hunters so we certainly ought to be able to deal with any type of weather.....

How about this, maybe anyone who wants to can go to Platte Falls a couple hours before the meeting to shoot, work on bows, hike around looking for sheds, BBQ or whatever.  Then we can hop in the cars and head to Cabellas for an actual sit down meeting.  If we fire up the grill we can even nock the edge off the hunger a bit before we head to Cabellas.  Couple dogs, brats, burgers or whatever at the range and then pick up maybe some fries and a coke at Cabellas to comply with the "eat to meet" rule.

Oh yea, and since the range is about 3/4 of a mile off of I-29 (take exit 19 which is road HH to the east) and I-435 hits 29 only a couple miles south of the range I doubt it would take more than about 20-25 minutes to make it to cabellas from the range.

If there are ranges elsewhere around KC or maybe over on the Kansas side, maybe a couple guys could get together there if it's less of a drive and do the same thing.
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Gatekeeper

Dave,

I like the way you think! I am game for your plan. I agree with the hassle of trying to pack our gear into the store and then only having a box to shoot in but I was trying to be accommodating to the whole group. Your plan is much more sensible. Thanks for your input.

I know I said I would wait until Friday 2/15/08 but, there are only four people from the list that haven't chimed in on this thread. Their profiles show that they haven't been to the site in a while. So, if they see this and can join us great but I think we should start moving forward. The four that I have not heard from are: brmize, PrairieHawk, Missouri Bowman and Fis'n River. If anybody knows how to contact them please let them know what is going on.

Kctreeman we have heard from you but you haven't let us know when you are available so I hope you can make it to the meeting. I know you want to hold our meeting at the Three Trails Archery shoot and draw from the experience of their group but I have talked to their treasurer and their officers are going to be too busy managing their shoot to spend time with us. I agree with you though, I think their knowledge would be very beneficial to our group.

From the looks of it Saturday afternoon is the best time to gather everyone. So I propose we set the meeting for Saturday 2/23/08, 1:00 at Cabela's. The head count that I get is 16 possibly 17 people that said Saturday afternoon will work for them.

I am working on a meeting agenda, and I am trying to get the President and the Treasurer from Three Trails Archery to come and join us at our meeting. I think these gentlemen have a lot of information that can really help us get started. I have sent a PM to Bob Burns AKA Stone Sheep asking him to join us and I am planning to go to their shoot this weekend and meet Bob and Jerry in person. If you have time this Sunday 2/17/08, please go and support their efforts. It is $12 for the shoot. Chili and stews will be provided and I believe there is unlimited shooting.

The next question is, and we will put this to a vote, do you want to hold the meeting in the food court and risk not having enough space or would you like to rent one of the banquet rooms for $75?

$75 x 7% tax = 80.25 / 16 people = $5.01 per person. With 17 people the cost is $4.72. This seems inexpensive to be insured a quite place to meet but this is a group decision so please cast your vote and we will go with the majority. I will keep track of the votes on the first page of this thread. I would like to get a decision on this by Sunday so that I can reserve one of the banquet rooms.

I think we are on our way boys. Keep up the good efforts.

Dave you are welcome! I have been wanting to meet some local guys for some time now and this seems like a great way to do it. I am hoping the benefits of getting a group together will pay out in large dividends of friendships and future adventures together.

After talking briefly with Jerry from Three Trails Archery, I realized how naive I am about putting together a club. Registering with the government and the NFAA, insurance etc... There is a lot of foundation work to do to build a good club. So we will see how deep everyone wants to go. I sure hope I can get Bob and Jerry to join us and answer some of the question that might come up.

Is Saturday the 23rd going to work for you?

Hey Tom, I just realized your post shows you are from Camden Point.  Heck you're just up the road from Platte City/Falls.  I also have a friend who lives up there whose last name is Mason.  I believe he's got quite a bit of family in the area.  He's into trad archery also but I don't think he has a computer.

Dave,

Yep. My wife and I have had land outside of Camden Point for 9 years now but we have only lived in the area for 4 years. I have lurked around the archery range a few times looking for trad guys but I never seem to be there at the right time. I have a feeling that will change real soon.

Tell your buddy about our meeting and ask him to join us. I have a neighbor across the road that just moved in and I found out that he shoots a longbow. I will try to get him to join us for the meeting.

We should all do this. If you know someone that shoots traditional archery please contact them and invite them to join us.
