HEy guys going on a hog hunt in june and plan on it being hot hot hot as it will be in texas...Just wondering what kinda day packs people like for HOT weather i know mine is nt gonna work as it gets hot in fall..THanks

Any day pack worn on your back will make you sweat.  You might want to think about a lumbar pack.  Nimrod makes some good ones.

As far as a traditional day pack worn on the back, you can't go wrong with a Kifaru Spike Camp.

This fall I bought a fanny pack 1000 cu,in. from cabelas It has the suspender straps with hooks to strap extra clothing on.  I don't think I'll use my day packs again.

I like the Badlands Monster Fanny. It has served me well over the last couple of years.

You've asked a technical question without providing data so we can help you out.

Hot, Hot Hot, for me means water hydration.  If you've never hunted with a camelback hydration system (or similar product) you're in for a treat.  The Camelback's ability to supply you with small sips of water by sucking on a tube is far superior to reaching for a canteen  Look to around 100 ounces of water.  You'll realize less leg cramping by staying hydrated and the tube system of sucking reduces movement, translate game doesn't see the movement so often.

Next, you haven't told me how long you're staying out?  Are you hunting out of your car trunk or are you bivoacing for a few days?

A key decision lies in the desire to have an internal frame or external frame pack.  Externals usually allow you to carry more weight farther but the internal frames sure are comfortable.

If you're staying out for a few then 2200 to 2800 cu inches will be comfy.  Staying out for a week or better, with a shelter and now you're looking at 4500 cu inches.

A simple day trip should be accomplished by a quality fanny pack.  My favorite setup for a day hunt is the Badlands Monster Fanny and a Camelback Hydration pack joined together.  The Badlands Monster Fanny is about 1100 cu inches, enough for basic lunch and supplies, a knife, rope, compass etc., maybe even a few game calls.

Most people have a tendency to pack too much of worthless items they probably won't need.  That John Rambo 15" survival knife with the hollow handle and fishing hooks is probably nice to have
but chances are a small blade of 3 inches will dress your game nicely.  The signal flares and satellite link w/ NASA gizmo might just take up space and bog you down with weight that just tires you out.

Do you plan on packing game out?  If so a skelton Freighter packframe might be best, with a small bag atttached for lunch and essentials.

If you're looking for a name dropper: Eberhart, Schuh, American Bison are quality packs.  The Kifaru line has a good following.  My personal favorite line is the Badlands products.  I personally own and use are: the Badlands Monster Fanny (1100 Cu In), the Badlands 2200 (2200 cu in) and the Badlands 4500 (4500 cu inches) Do you see pattern here?  Each level of pack is twice the size, depending on how long I plan to be out.  No matter which pack I use, there is always a water hydration bladder with me.

I have a Blacks Creek pack.  I love it.  I have had mine for 2 years now.  The only reason I have though about getting getting a new one is to get a new model they have.  My son will get the one I have now.

Budog.   I agree with some statements above.  You probably don't even need a pack per se.  a fanny pack should hold all the gear you need for a day trip sorta hunt.  If you are like me and tend to need a lot of water, then for sure look at a hydration pack system and then a fanny pack.

With some of the hydration pack systems you may be able to stow a few things into or onto that pack itself and not even need a fanny pack.

Really...what do you need ?   Water...compass, knife, tracker tape and some snacks. Maybe a small camera if you are so inclined.  Many of these things can go on your belt.

Take a look at the Badlamds Hypervent pack. One of our sponsors (Sagecreek Outfitters) carries them at a fair price. Designed to leave an air space between your back and the pack. Comes with hydration system. Worked well for me in 2007. Will also allow you to shoot your bow without taking off the pack. Good luck.

I have a Badlands Monster Fannypack also and it is awesome. I dont have the hydration system but it has pouches in the sides to hold water bottles which work great for me. This is a pack that can be used year round as it has straps that allow you to strap on extra clothes as it warms up or for when it cools off and it is big enough inside to hold more stuff than you want to carry all day.

I looked at the monster and was not impressed. I've heard good things about Cabela's all day transporter fanny pack.

I have a Vista (cheap price-solid pack) that has more room than necessary for a day pack and a Bison Gear ($ but worth every penny)for longer trips.  I have 6 rreally bad vertebrea and don't use a shoulder pack anymore.

Badlands fanny pack. I have the Stealth Roll top and my brother has the Monster. We both feel the Monster is a little big for eastern hunting.

It will be a 3 day hunt but we will be back at camp everynight etc and maybe once during the day as it is going to be very very hot...no bivy or anything like that..someday though someday..thanks for the suggestions hope to get somemore.

I have two Bison Gear packs: a First Trip Explorer (about 1100cu/in with a 1200 cu/in expandable game bag) in brown predator wool and a Lemhi (3200cu/in) in predator deception wolfskin (I think). 90% of the time, unless I'm staying out overnight, I'll have on the Explorer. Comfortable design, easy to shoot while wearing, lots of lashing points, many, many customizable options from Bison Gear so you will get EXACTLY the pack you want. I've had mine for about 6-7 years and it still looks brand new.

Badlands has a big following, and from the one's I've seen are great packs. I like the little touches they put on them, like the rubber pulls on the zippers. I might consider one of theirs if I ever need a really big pack to supplement the two smaller ones I have now.
