Well, I live in a very heavily wooded, thick underbrush steep hilly place.  I lose arrows all the time.  So, I am thinking of puting up to treated 4x4's in the ground and hanging an old rubber truck bed mat between them.  In front of that I can place my targets, like the block or a 3x3 bag filled with stuffing painted on the front.  That way, I have a big backstop to stop "fliers" from getting away from myself or my kids.  So any ideas pro or con as to this set up?  Will a bed linner last?

Just my opinion but I think you would be better off hanging an old carpet instead of the truck liner. I don't think the liner would last too long.

I dont know how long a bed liner would last but i do know you need two grown men and a pully to get arrows out of them.  

Our archery shop has a 3D course that uses old carpet for back stops. It is easier to get arrows out rather than rubber. But sometimes I get great penetration and the carpet really eats up fletching. But thats better than replacing lost arrows. Jim

Old carpet, eh?  I happen to have one I'd like to get rid of, now you guys have provided a use for it-great idea, gang.  Thanks!!  I suppose one would sink two 4X4 posts, with cable between them, and drape the carpet over the line?  What would be a better method of securing the rug?

Angus, yeah thats the way our shop does it. Drapped over the cable line so you get double the stopping power. Jim

I tried old carpeting but the arrows go right through them.  They are easier to find after they go through a couple plies though.  Carbons shot out of a 70 lb Jack Howard goes through a lot of things I guess.  I am going to use 4x4 and 2x6's for a backstop.  I don't miss very often.but the TP monster lurks...

thanks, Jim, pretty much what I thought.  Our shop had strips of rubber belting, and if  you missed the target, it took a wrecker with a winch to pull the things out!  I'll put the carpet to good use!

I use a cattle stall mat behind my targets.  It works great.  Only the point sticks into the mat and its not hard to pull the arrow out.

I use old t-posts (2 side 1 across) to hang the carpet. Much easier to put in the ground and get out  if needed.

if the carpet is hung loosley so it can swing it will help. also old felt backed carpet works the best with a tight weave.

I made a saw horse from treated ties. 6'x8'
You can hang the carpet over it and it doubles up.
just keep putting another piece on top as needed.
Like was said if they go through they are easy to find for the most part..

build a rack to hang four pieces of carpet (or two folded over) hanging free. They are easy to change and will stop arrows. You could use backing aalso.  Good luck
