The step through, push/pull or boy scout method is the correct was to string a longbow. Stringers are made for recurves.

A stringer works just fine for my longbows.

I use the Selway longbow stringer and have had good luck with it.  I do leatherwork as a hobby and have also made the "cup-type" stringers and have used them.

The longbow stringer does get used on my recurves occasionally and it works, but I have a dedicated recurve stringer that works better, as it holds the string on the tip more firmly.  Other than that they are nearly identical in practical use.

I do use the "push-pull" method occasionally, but as a rule I use a stringer on my bows.

The Boy Scouts at one time taught the "step through" and the "push-pull" methods, but no longer (that is what I learned a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away).  I am guessing they were deemed potentially unsafe or the potential damage to a bow and/or Scout is too great.

The Archery Merit Badge now states "Always use a bow stringer when stringing your bow.  Improper stringing or using the step-through or push-pull methods can cause permanent damage."  The manual makes no differentiation between a longbow and a recurve bow, as far as stringing the bow is concerned.

The Selway stringer can be purchased from a number of different sponsors of TradGang.

I use a stringer on my longbows and selfbows and they work well but I use a longbow stringer that go on both ends.

Thunderhorn stringers are pretty nice.

Selway.
I grew up stepping through. I once saw a recurve develop a twist with ONE step-through. I always use a stringer now. Bob Morrison says to always use one with his bows, lest you void the warranty. Danged if I wanna pi$$ off Bob!

Another vote for the Selway Stringer. They do a great job.

I really like the one Black Widow sells. I liked it so much I ordered another one. It works great on recurves or longbows.

Webster has my vote, I'm on my second one. Lost the first one and quickly ordered another. Has limb pockets for both longbows and recurves without having to fiddle around with making adjustments or changing anything.

highnoonhunter

I like the Bateman stringers. Mine has worked well on recurves and longbows.

I use and sell the Bearpaw stringers...best stringers on the market!! Always use a stringer...like Killdeer said, you could void warranty or worse yet...it's always fun 'till someone loses an eye!!

cajuntec

Selway.  I've got one for my longbow, and another for my recurve.  Same basic principal, but the limb tip cups for the bottom are different.
All the best,
Glenn
