I made a string with 16 strands of dacron to use as I finished the forward riser longbow I made and last night I made a 14 strand string out of ultracam for it. The difference was amazing to me. The sound and vibration reduced by half with the new string.    

what is ultracam? I hadn't heard of that yet.

I have some that I used on my compound bows. No stretch and for some reason makes for a pretty quiet string.

Ultra cam string is made by Brownell it is very close to BCY 8125 string,similar in diameter and strength.

Choosing a string material for a bow can be a funny prospect.  Different bows and bow designs can behave differently with different materials.  I have some that are quiet as can be with dacron and others that are noisy.  I've got another bow that doesn't like 8125.  It produces a noticable buzz in the riser when shot with an 8125 string.  So that bow gets a D-75 string.  Sometimes it takes playing with different materials to find what a given bow likes.

Where can I find out about the different properties for different types of string.  Is there an overall top of the line string?

14 strands of 120 lb string = 1680 lbs!!! It must be a really strong bow??? ;-) why not less strands to like 6 times the draw weight, is not that the norm???

Tim if you figure the small diameter of the strands anything less than 14 strands makes for a very loose fit for my nocks. Is it possible to use less? Yes just harder for me to get the serving size right.

Like Chris said, some bows seem to "like" one material over another, or even a different strand count of the same material.  Some bows seem to like one as well as another, but others can be picky.  The only way to know for sure is to try out different ones.  I've had the best luck with Dynaflight '97 for a "best" over-all.

You can always add a couple strands of string material under the serving. Kind of like how some folks pad end loops.
