I landed a nice Northern Mist Superior long bow here on the classifieds. I would like to shoot woodies i have a question on the spine. I draw 27 inches bow is 51# at 28 inches. Broadhead weight is 150 grains.I build all my carbon and aluminium arrows this will be my first crack at woodies.I am thinking 50 to 55. Will be ordering some surewoods am i on the right track? Not sure but i think the string is fastflight. Wood arrow gurus please advise thanks. TD.

what are you cutting them to?  Nock to BoP(back of point)

If it were me , I would get a test kit from Surewood first .

How deep is the shelf cut?  A Hill style bow cut 3/16 out will generally shoot a 28" BOP and 125 point spined at or a little below draw weight.  I think the Superior is cut a little deeper which will make the spine a little higher.  The 150 gr will raise it a few pounds, too.  I suggest asking Steve Turay.  He knows his bows and will be happy to help.

I agree with Fletcher.  The 50-55 will likely work, but I'd probably go to 55-60, if you're going to cut the arrows to about 28 inches BOP for your 27-inch draw.  Best though to talk with Steve.

I have a Superior #50@28" 66". My draw length is 27". I shoot woods of 28.5 BOP with 125grns that are 50-55. I also have a Classic and two Sheltons. I have found that they all seem to like spines that are close to actual weight of the bow.

Test kit would be the best bet. Northern Mists at your draw length are usually spot on with wood spines. You'll love your superior. I have one as well. All yew.

Thanks guys i am going with the 50 to 55. I will be using feathers from last years spring gobbler.This is going to be fun. I have harvested small game with a longbow but no big game.I was on the side lines for a  bit but am now back and strong as ever. I just called and talked with Steve at Surewood tonight, and ended up ordering a test kit, started with 45-50#, and ordered an extra half dozen 60-65# and 65-70# with the 9 1/2" back taper to try out of my Northern Mist Baraga and Whisper.  They both seem to like heavier shafts and am hoping with the back taper it will soften the spine a bit, I'm looking forward to getting them and playing with them.  I sent close to an hour on the phone with them talking bows, and shafts.  Really seem like great guys to do business with.

Do you Northern Mist guys use fast flight strings? I want to try a Ten ring string thanks. TD.

NM bows handle fast flite fine.

Tim, you might want to start with those 50/55's a little longer than 28", just in case the bow likes a bit weaker shaft. Just a thought.
