I know about satin, glass, and semi gloss...but what is the rough frost finish lots of bowyers use and where do I get it?

Bob, the textured finish that I think you are seeking is actually created by adjusting your spray gun and compressor so that you get a splattered effect.

You can get textured finish by moving away from bow when spraying with a can......

I had no idea...     I will have to try it... I have had a few bows over the years with a very nice nearly opaque finish that was slightly rough, and I liked it.  Seems like all of the Snowshoe bows had it...and maybe even a spider bow or two... LOL.  I usually use poly finish but maybe it has to be some specific finish?

Hi Bob several marine epoxy's have the frosty textured finish.It's sprayed right out of the can (special tip)and will dry looking somewhat like what your after textured and flat.As for the atcul frost finish (smooth surface) that can be done with 2000 grit wet dry sand paper.Once your done with the new finish job and it's dry.Just wet sand the bow with 2000-2200 grit wet dry and do not do the final polish.Just leaveing the wet sanding finish.They look great and can be polished up later on if you like.bd

Let me paint your car.  I guarantee it'll have a frost finish.  Unintentionally, but it'll have it.

thanks to all...I will Google the spray marine finish and see what it says, and try the wet sanding of my current poly spray.  I guess I should just write and ask Dave what he uses too...if he ever comes out of the woods... LOL.
My biggest problem right now is getting my shop warm enough to use any finish...  :(

Like stated above it is done by adjusting the spray gun, I use Satin Fullerplast with a fan spray nozzel and get the rought textured finish. I have had Super results with this method....ONE SHOT...          

To add yet another "answer," Thunderhorn Bows made the most gorgeous frosted bow I've ever seen, and the bowyer, Duane Jessop, told me he got the effect with ultra-fine sandpaper. There seem to be more than one way to skin this frosty cat.

I've used polyurethane in a spray can to get a similar effect. After applying several coats of satin to protect your bow,,rough it up with some fine steel wool. Hold the can back a couple feet from the bow and just bump the nozzle instead of holding it down. This will send a fine "splatter" out onto the bow,,let dry breifly and splatter again until you get the coverage and texture your looking for. It will give the bow that fine rough shark skin or sandpaper kind of texture.
