Shadowhunter, that spike probably still has milk in his stomach.  I have a couple of youngsters like that running around here.  Our bonus doe and spike season thins a lot of first year bucks out of the herd.  He will eat really well, even if there isn't much meat.

Nice shooting, Danny.

Outstanding, Danny, Congratulations!

That spike is at least 1 and a half years old. Same age class deer as some 8 and 6 points running around the ranch. He would never turn into anything good. That is exactly why he was taken out of the herd.

Thanks everyone.

I saw that beautiful string Danny. Gary's arrows are awesome!

I agree that he is a year and a half old, Danny. I was only exaggerating a little bit when I said that he still had milk in his stomach. If they have six and eight point first horn bucks running around on that ranch, he needed to be culled.  My first year bucks weigh 70-80 pounds and have forkhorns or perhaps forks with tiny brow tines. I have several running around like that one that I suspect were late crop 2015 fawns.  Still young deer, but we try to let them get their second set of antlers before culling. Each ranch is different.  We had a wildfire and three years of drought that really hammered our deer hard.  It really is great to see lots of young bucks this year.

Once again, nice shooting and enjoy the venison.

Yeah Brad, my friend has 2 and 3 year old forkys and cow horn spikes. He is trying to get rid of them to improve the herd as he does not want them breeding the does. He tries to get some of the people that hunt there to take a cull in addition to a good buck, but most do not. Do not know why as they do not have to waist a taq to do it. He has cull tags. Thanks and yes he was good eating. I took all the meat to my daughter in Virginia and cooked up some chicken fried back straps while there, very tender.
