I came across an article a few years ago that showed how to make your own camo face paint out of local clay .
I can't find it and don't remember how it was done .
The article might have been in Primitive Archer Magazine but I don't know .
I do remember that they recommend using what was in the area you were going to hunt to get the best color for that area .
Anyone know about this or do this ?

Not sure, I tried making my own with carbon coconut oil and bee wax.  It was too runny. Just the plain carbon worked better.  A burnt cork is simply, effective, and easy to clean up.

The clay here is smooth and red or grey, I think you could just put that on your face as is.

I pretty sure it was in tbm magazine and wrote by Billy Berger. I don't remember what moth and year it was in.

Yep.  I stay bearded during hunting seasons.

I've done some trial and error with homemade stuff since my wife makes a lot of her own cosmetics and we have an unlimited supply of beeswax.  I keep going back to a burnt cork & a simple camo face mask.

Some failures:

Blackened wine cork carbon mixed with white can give a reddish or purple tint -- especially if you use the side that lies in the bottle.

Turmeric can add some yellow but also stains the skin.  You'll look a bit jaundiced after wearing that for anymore than a few minutes.  Maybe if you're dressing up as Trump for a costume party the next day?

I'd be interested to know if anybody has other coloring ideas.  I carry homemade sunscreen with me in the field so adding some sort of natural tint would be easy & could serve a double purpose.

What I'm talking about is , you dig up some clay and put it in a container and moisten it .
But I don't remember what was used to do that .
I can't find the article but it's supposed to clean off easy as well .

why not just use plain old clay and water? Or did they get it wet with something that changed its properties?
