Maybe 20 years ago I had read about this Olympian from maybe the 50's who was so good he was shooting birds in flight.

If I'm not mistaken it was the same fellow who was given a heavy custom bow to take to Africa and shot elephant.

The name escapes me though. Anyone know who this was?

Don't know who he is, but lots of trad hunters  shoot birds in flight.  Do a search on here for examples.  Of course, some do miss more than others.   :goldtooth:

There are several threads here of hunts where Tradgangers  shoot birds on the wing.....mostly pheasants.

Not sure if he was an Olympian but Bill Negley shot an elephant with a heavy custom recurve?

Archery was not part of the modern Olympics until 1972. Could have been another competition like the world championships though. There are not to many who have hunted elephant with recurves or longbows, I think there is a thread about it in the Africa forum on this site.

That may well have been him as I recall he had a special bow made. It could even be I'm recalling it wrong and lumping several people into one.

John Williams did some bird hunting I think, but he was not from the 50s.  I watched the Bill Negley films, better than anything that is on TV, thanks for posting the link.

Ben Pearson shot ducks on the wing, pass shooting.  He provided a couple of bows for Bob Swinehart to take to Africa.  Swinehart killed elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, lion and others.  I don't know if he used Pearson bows for any of the kills.

Fred Bear shot pheasants on the wing in his dvd's. He shot an elephant also. If I'm correct, Bear Archery provided the 100# bow for Negley.

It certainly wasn't Fred Bear as I knew who he was then. It was/is a name not familiar to me, though that doesn't mean much.
