I have been making my own arrows for a long time but I would like to start getting fancy and chopping my own feathers. I was thinking of trying membrane splicing and my question is this:

When membrane splicing, is it possible to cut the full length feather in half and make 2 feathers from 1 full length or does that not leave enough room to play with? I am making 4" parabolics. Just wanted to know what to expect before I order feathers.

It depends on the feather.

Seems like full length feathers processed from domestic turkeys have gotten shorter and shorter over time.

I usually take the best single feather out of the middle somewhere depending on oil line height and quill width, but I'm usually fletching with 5" or 5 1/4" sections.

On a good long full sized primary turkey feather, you can  get 2,  4" fletching. Not true on every feather, but nice when you can.

most of the full lengths i have used are too narrow of a quill at the bakc to get a good bond. So i cut mine from the center and use the extra ends for splicing
