? about hafting stone points

I have made several cane arrows and mounted stone points on them. The problem is the glue bonds broke loose when test shot into my bag target. I glued them with pine pitch and charcoal glue made by a very successful primitive artisan and hunter. It seemed to be a solid mount. I used sinew to lash the points in place. These arrows looked just much like so many of the ones I have seen here and in magazines. They seemed to be very tight. How solid are the heads on the hunting arrows you guys use? How often does the arrow head break loose? Any suggestions?

Make sure you heat the stone some before you use the pitch glue . That will help the adheasion to the stone .
Don't heat the stone to much , just about as hot as you can still touch it but don't want to hold it very long .
Also after you wrap with senu , you can lightly flame over the wraps, that will set the sinu .
Might help you .
Also keep in mind , that point has to only do it's job once .

Don't shoot stone points into bag targets! Only shoot them into solid styrofoam (like boat dock foam) targets! And then be gentle when you pull them.

I use a touch of ultra gel super glue to hold them into place and then slow drying two part epoxy with a drop of india ink to turn the glue black. Then I wrap with fake sinew which comes in assorted colors. I then coat the wrap with super glue.

If your using artificial sinew you will not get a super tight bond. Real sinew wrapped with hide glue will shrink as it drys making it extra tight.

I've made a lot of pitch for making stone knives. One thing I add to mine is dry ground up horse manure. You can use hay or dried grass but I like manure because the horse does most of the grinding for you lol. I think it makes it a bit stronger. Kinda like epoxy vs glass and epoxy. Atleast that's how I see it. Hope that helps

When I shoot stone points I do not pull arrows, I push them through the foam and remove that way. Doesn't seem to bother the fletch.

You can reheat the stone point, true up the point to the arrow and let it cool. I use a foam target to test all my hunting arrows. If the point becomes loose I just reheat the point and reset it. Works well. I like using pitch glue because it is so simple to reset a loosened point.
My pitch glue is made from hard, brittle pitch, bees wax and finely ground hardwood charcoal. It has worked well for me over the years.

It sounds like some of you guys with experience have had points loosen up in targets somewhere along the way. What about performance with game? If possible, I prefer to use only natural pitch glue and real sinew.

Sam, I've never taken game with stone point but I wouldn't hesitate to do so if the opportunity were to arise. I think I'd keep the shots as close as possible(to 15yds) and on a calm animal.
Lots of folks have taken game with stone heads. The wounds from stone points looks pretty devastating.

I have taken one deer with one of my points and the wood arrow and point stayed together. The deer went 40 yards.
