Hey guys I was wondering if I could have a bowyer put some Phenolic on my longbow tips, and shoot with fast flight strings. My longbow right now is just glass on both sides with an osage core, and string grooves filed on it. I live less than an hour from Tracy Tickett and was thinkin about asking him to do it if it was possible. Smart move or dumb move? Fast flight or stick with B-50. I also thought that overlays would look great on this bow dont really know why they werent put on when it was made.Opinions please. Thanks

not sure what kind of bow ya have but if the glass is all rounded off at the tips it might make it interesting - it's best to have a good flat surface to glue the tip overlays to - not saying ya can't do it, just something to consider

what kind of bow is it? any close up pics of the tips?

And for some reason I cant' get the picture to work. Lol even thought Ive done it before.

why don't ya give it a shot? heck the hardest part since the string grooves are there is put'n on the finish. couple weeks the season ul be over and you'll have plenty of time for it

thought it worth mentioning that I'm suggesting this for cosmetic reasons and depending on the age and make up of the bow I'd be careful about switching to fast flight strings - it may be a little faster but I'm not sure I'd risk damaging the bow

If you have any skills at all you can do the tips yourself. Phenolic or some bone would do equally well. I have never seen a bow get damaged with FF to blame per se--"could have happened with any string". Why don't you make sure you have the best B50 string possible for your bow, with the correct number of strands and made by an expert like Chad at recurves.com. FF would then only be 3-4 fps faster, if that. Then check out your arrow flight and get that perfect. Do those two things and you won't have to worry about whether or not your string material is hurting your bow. IMHO.

My strings have been made by an expert, Tracy Trickett, he used to be with morrisson, and I dont have any experience with doing the tips. But I'm sure he would do it without charging much. I'm just trying to get my bow top notch. I dont see how putting on tips, and using fast flight would damage my bow it's a pretty tough bow.

not trying to scare you but if you read through this thread someone speaks of a problem due to FF. was that the cause? who knows but for 3 to 4 fps I wouldn't risk it. Tracy will lead you the right way - had the pleasure of talking with him at Cloverdale. He's a top notch bowyer.

I wonder why people always associate FF type string with tips. When Schaefer bow are made for fast flight Dave does this by building a bow with a reinforced riser. Maybe more involved? Nah! What could he possibly know?
