Maybe, your arrow was sliding up or down your string.

would this cause this to happen?

Looper

When you release your string, the arrow remains on the string until the string reaches the brace height, more or less. Until that point, the arrow will move towards the part of the string that was pulled the furthest, which is typically where your middle string finger is.

That downward movement on the string, however slight and however quickly, will cause your arrow to bounce off the rest/shelf, making tuning nearly impossible. A second nock, below the arrow, prevents that unwanted slide down the string.

It's important to leave a small (1/16") gap between a nocked arrow and the bottom nock to prevent the nock being pinched at full draw.

i cant believe how much that little bit has shrunk my groups at further range

Im with you on this one.... I remember the difference well. If you want even better feel and maybe performance,  tie on your nocking points with suitable material instead of pinch ons. It makes a big difference too.

whats the difference? i really hate to change something thats working well

One thing is glove or tab wear with clamp ons

With brass nock sets you need a quality set of nock pliers to avoid wear on your glove/tab.  I don't have any problem with mine.

What's the best tie on nocks you guys use? Looking for something easy with instructions. Thanks a lot guys

BCY makes a nock tying thread.  One spool will last most folks a lifetime.  It's a coated nylon.  Elastic, so it holds a knot very well.  Burns and melts great also, and it's cheap.

"Best" way to tie on a nock depends on opinions.  I like simple, so a few half-hitches finished with a square knot or two works fine for me.  You can get as complicated as you want, but for me one works as well as the next.

I have always used tie on nock points - even on  compounds. I use whatever string material is available, Dacron or FF. Saw somewhere years ago a recommended knot by tying several overhand knots alternating back and forth on two sides of the serving and tying it off. You can vary knot size for whatever you need depending on string  diameter and nock gap.

Never thought of trying two nocks sets though to see if that improves flight.

I like this one best. I use .40 diameter dacron fishing line. Follow Ricks direcions, and pay attention to keep the loops in line when slowly drawing it up tight. Awesome nock point.
