It was about 25 years ago I was bow hunting for deer on my sister and brother in law's property .
It was about a 45 minute drive for me .
Now my sister's daughters were home alone and I let them know that I was out back hunting .
I started on stand a little after noon and planned to set there till dark .
It was a good hunting land , I took several deer from there and I hadn't had a shot opportunity that year yet .
It was about two hours of light left , was about when the deer would start moving .
A squirrel that I was watching near me ran up the tree it was in a little higher and was looking towards the farm house .
I was looking hard to see what was coming .
It was my younger niece walking back to where I was . I could tell that she was looking for me so I waved my arms so she could see me .
My first thought was , that there could be something wrong up at the house .
She walked up to me and sat down beside me .
Took a backpack off and pulled out a thermos of chicken noodle soup , a thermos of hot chocolate , bowl and spoon .
And in a quiet whisper she thought that I might be getting hungry so she fixed me the soup and hot chocolate .
Just told her thank you and started eating .
She sat there for about another hour talking to me .
Well there was going to be other days to hunt .
Was just remembering that today and had a good laugh once again .
I think my sister said something to her that uncle Dale dosent need her to take him lunch when he is hunting .

That's funny!! But her heart was in the right place. And chicken noodle soup is never a bad thing, especially if it's cold!!

Great story and memory there.

That's such a kind gesture from your niece. Sometimes the best hunting memories have nothing to do with the animals we seek!

Captain*Kirk

I think you got the better end of the deal, Dale. Better than if you had taken a deer.

You did the right thing - and so did she. Kids are more important than a deer, and thinking of others is always a good sign.

That is great! I get to head to the office with a smile, thank you!!

Shadowhnter

Hahaha! Bless her heart!

If everybody did such a kindness for somebody else each day, the world would be better off. You are lucky to have family members such as she.

You will remember that a lot longer than a typical evening hunt, thanks for sharing, she sounds like a very considerate young lady....

That is a great story. You are blessed. Jawge

You sure handled that the right way. A lot of things are more important than killing a deer and you chose the better course that afternoon.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Various bows, but if you see me shooting, it's probably a Toelke in my hand!
