I'll have to twist up a long string and see how an under 6" brace treats me !!

Rossco7002

I'm shooting a Schulz Granpa 65 inches at 5 1/2 inch brace height. Noticeably more performance than when it arrived set nearly an inch higher than that.....

my bows shoot good at about 5 7/8", all 66" long.  real quiet too....

I shoot my 64"s and 66"s at 5.5-5.75" brace.  Very quiet and I like to think that little extra string time is giving me a tad more performance.  Also I remember reading on another site that David Miller recommends brace heights of 6" and under for his bows.

Overspined

6 1/4" seems good for my 68" bows, and a little higher on T/D sleeve bow. I played a bit with brace heights and didn't notice a benefit of going too low. 66" bow 6" is within the usual recommendations by most bowyers. It usually ends up a tad different if there are any fine tuning issues that need correcting. I played with a chrono and brace heights and didn't find any significant change within that 1/2" range. Set it via recommendations and tweak from there.

Overspined

If the arrow is kicking left and up, I think you are underspined and nock point is low. Adjust one thing at a time. I would work on the nock point a little first, and see what happens. If it just looks wrong but flies better, work on the shaft length, and reset the nock where it was.  Easier yet, add a much lighter broadhead and see what happens, does the kick to the left go away? If so, then you know you were weak and need to trim.

As far as arrow tuning, I have found starting with a fletched shaft and the broadhead you intend to shoot is easier for me than going the other way. As long as you are close to where you need to be on shaft spine and length, leave it a little long and add the broadhead.  If it's weak, as expected, trim and do it again. Once you get it close play a bit with the nock, although after some experience, this is usually pretty consistent.  Sometimes just a little adjustment and they shoot great, sometimes trim a touch more and it will come in perfect. With Hill bows, nocking above the nock will often help get rid of some of the arrow flight issues as they seem to fly better and be less sensitive of spine when nocked above the nock point.

If you already are close with field points, add the broadhead and play with length from there.  If you are pulling the head to the bow already, you might have problems if the shafts are weak, and just need a lighter head. If you left room, you can usually get it right in there.

Also, try cock feather in.

Thanks for all the advice!!  I will tinker this weekend and see what happens.

Overspined: I could not have said it better myself.  I go off of the charts and get close then get my BH flying good.  I tried bareshaft for the first time this year and I was getting some strange readings, and the next thing I know my shooting was messed up for a while.   So I re-evaluated my tactics and went back to what I knew and it's game on again.

Also UPDATE: my new zebra wood/ red elm core C&N Hill style arrived yesterday.......... No one was home so I have to wait untill today after work to pick it up  :(

When you are measuring BH, I assume everyone measures from the belly of the grip to the string.  My HH Big 5 seems to like a 6" BH but my handle is 2 1/4" deep, not the standard 2".  So do I actually have a 6 1/4" BH?

Mudd

Play with enough bows and brace heights and you'll figure out that this isn't an exact science.

There are recommended brace heights, but those are just ballpark numbers. Something to get you going,it could be that you start there and end there since you are shooting good but don't be afraid to play with your string.

There are sweet spots and then there are "sweet" spots.

Why? Because each of us is just a little different in some ways.

Have fun with it, it's not brain surgery.

There isn't anything that you can do that can't be undone if you decide you don't like the results of what you tried.

My 2 cents worth.

I messed with brace heights on many of my bows. I really can't tell much of a difference usually.

I have a suspicion that the post about the arrows not bare shafting with Hill style bows has more going on than a brace height or a spine issue.

Mudd

I got my package from Nate(Sunset Hill) this morning along with this note.

Mudd......."The reason I wanted to build you this quiver ~ Howard Hill's quiver during the 1930's& 1940's was exactly like this one.

You can see the quiver in action in the movie "robin Hood" w/Errol Flynn. The very 1st shot in the archery tournament shows the quiver on Hill's back as Captain of the archers.

In that movie he was not only wearing quiver but is wearing a hat like the ones you make for "Mudd's Merry Men", that reminded me of just how much you reminded me of Hill as "Captain" of the archers.

You are the Honorary "Captain" of us Tradgang archers, so you deserve this "Captain" model quiver.

This is model #1 ~ very special for a special person.

God bless, Nate"
