Here are a few photo's of my recently acquired Sunset Hill "The Bone Collector".

At some point the grip wrap had been replaced and it was too short from top to bottom and was not a very complimentary color.

I went to Tandy Leather this morning and fixed that.

Nice carmelized bamboo limbs.

Hey JCJ.  That Sunset looks really nice.  What kind of leather is that on the new wrap?  I really like the grain on it.  Enjoy the bow.

What a great thread; I am getting back into archery and bowhunting. I am literally dusting off my bows, and the Hills are a favorite.

I had a Wesley Special built for me in 2007, a great shooter. It is 50#@29", 68" length, with a cocobolo riser, brown glass limbs, dual shelf and takedown with moose hide wrap. Craig makes nice POC arrows, too by the way.
2nd Hill is also a dual shelf (I'm a lefty), 66@28, 70" HalfBreed model.

Both shoot better than me. Recurves are easier to be accurate with, but Hills make you want to practice.

It was just a piece of chrome tanned cowhide from the remnants bin at Tandy.

Replacing a non-laced grip like this is pretty simple and I too like the texture and color of this particular piece.

Makes an already attractive bow a little more attractive.

JCJ "The Bone Collector" is a beauty and I am so glad that you found it before I did...lol

It is most definitely a looker!

Please let us know how it shoots for you.

I am still waiting like a small child, with all of that childlike anticipation for my new Sunset Hill to get here.

Our deer season is still in here and there's nothing that excites me more than the thought of getting to carry mine hunting and allowing it to take me into "Sherwood".

The road to "Sherwood" makes for an awesome journey.

Roy:

It shoots nice like most the other various makers bows of this type I have owned over the years.

Shows better attention to detail than some in terms of build quality.

I notice that kind of thing as I build split-cane fly rods and attention to detail in build quality is one of my strengths.

Hope your bow arrives soon.

I'm not sure if this bow will stay with me. It is a little shorter than  what I like in this style bow so I will probably pass it on to another who has a shorter draw than I.

Is a 5 strand 450+ flemish adequate for a 68" 45# Redman?  I was playing with string materials. I am a skinny string fan and this size fits my nocks well double served.

More than quick enough, especially when the tips are this stiff..

You really haven't hunted the old fashion way until you've done it from one of these Indian houses.(The Tipi) "Glenn ST. Charles"

How does a longbowman put something like this down on paper? There is too big of a lump in my throat to think I can do it well, but days like this do not come often, so I will give it a try.

I returned from a mule deer hunt last night to find that an old friend was waiting for me. A cherished and very dear old friend. All the way from British Columbia.

Several years back, a good friend of mine named Bill was visiting from Canada, and just happened to mention that he had brought me a gift----a 10x12 canvas wall tent, in pristine condition.

He said he wasn't going to be using it any more, and wanted it to have a good home where it would get thoroughly used and worn out. Just the way a canvas tent is supposed to get used.

Well, I am too old fashioned to let a gift like that come undeserved, so I put some thought to it, and when all the visiting was over and he jumped in the truck to head back North to Canada, he had a Hill bow with him as a thank you for the tent.

This wasn't just any Hill bow. It was one of the killingest Hill bows in the Northwest. When I pointed this bow at anything, it died, and quickly.

Squirrels, rabbits, huge bull elk, coyotes, mule deer, bear, javelina, moose and more. This bow had done it all, over and over, proving itself again and again. It even saved my life once, by not snapping in half when I jammed it into the neck of a charging wild boar. I was lifted completely off the ground and flew backwards from the boar's speed and power, but the bow held together and I am still here to talk about it.

When Bill gave me the canvas wall tent, I gave him this bow in return, even though he tried to talk me out of it. You see, I had just returned from Australia, and had decided that take-down two-piece Hill bows were the ones for me, as they were the best ones to travel with, so I gave Bill my only one-piece Hill bow in gratitude for the tent. I knew the bow would have a great home, and have lots of other Hill bows nearby, as Bill has quite a collection of Hills. It was going to a great home.  A tent in exchange for a killer bow. A perfect trade made many years ago!

So, imaging my surprise upon returning home from a mule deer hunt late at night and finding this old friend returned to me. It seems the bow just wasn't getting the kind of adventures it required up there in Canada, and Bill thought it needed to come home to Idaho where it could once again glide along forest paths in search of food and adventure.

I realize you all enjoy looking at photos of beautiful Hill bows. I do too, but please indulge me as I share some photos of one of the ugliest Hill bows around. He's not pretty. He's not shiny, and he's anything but fancy, but trust me, this bow knows how to hunt. Big time!

He's got more scars and scrapes and dings and dents than ten bows his age. On a scale of one to ten in looks, this is most assuredly a one. But when it comes to making a killing shot, I have never seen it's equal.

Welcome home my friend, welcome home.

Does he still remember how to shoot you ask? Oh yeah!

Rik

swampthing

Yes, it is the Miller. All Bamboo.

Details Rik... details! Length... Weight...

Is that a little spray camo on there?

I'd say that's just about as true a beauty as they come.  Ya just can't buy character!
