Rik ,
Thanks for the posts, the photos and sharing the hunting experiences!
You've got a great way with written word!!

Also, your bow isn't ugly. Like the Keno twins say on Antique Road Show, "It has great patina"!

I ordered my first HH, a Big 5, last week and will go with wood arrows.  Can anyone tell me what spine I should go with if the bow is 45# at 28 and my draw length is about 25.5?

Thanks!

Bill

Rik, I saw that Danny had the 6000th but when I checked his recent posts it said it was 6023.
That happened a couple of hundered pages back as well. I wonder whats up with that?

I heard tonkin cane is a better than bamboo in a hill style bow. Is it á kind of bamboo?

swampthing

Yes it is a type of bamboo. It is very dense. Very narrow. If you know how to make a concave/convex limb, with glass, you will have one hell of a bow. Madake makes quite the bow as well.

What a great thread. I've kept up with it since it started. I haven't posted on it till now. I don't post much. Hill style bows are fun to shoot. Keep it going.

Bill, I'm shooting a bow of the same specs and draw length as you. I'd wait til you get the bow before investing in arrows. I have found that that my Wesley likes an arrow much stiffer than you'd expect.

My recommendation is to tinker with some arrows you've already got til you have a set-up shooting well then replicate that spine when moving to wood.... or get a test pack of woodies and tinker with those...

Rossco,

Thanks for the advice.  I'll wait till I get the bow and then see what would work.

I use Stu Millers calc and it was pretty much spot on with my BW PLX and Axis N-Fused carbons.  But it was off with GT 3555 and aluminum arrows.  Not sure how to use Stu's calc with wood arrows.

Just curious, what did you end up with?

Rossco7002

I'm still working on my set-up to see what flies best. As an example - today I was shooting beeman mfx 600's cut to 28.5 inches with a 75gr insert and 200gr head. I noticed some slight waggle in flight so started dropping head weight. I got down to 125gr and was still shooting where I looked (this arrow shows about 15lbs stiff on Stu's calc).

I've only been shooting this bow for a month so I'm gonna spend a lot of time tinkering to see what works best. Tuning it seems to be a much different animal than my other bows but it is proving to be a really enjoyable experience.

Rossco, my experience with spine mimics yours.  My 70# Wesley loves an 80# spine.  That's about 10# heaver than Stu's calculator says and I'm even running B50.  Some say that the Hills run a bit heaver than marked.  All though I've never scaled mine.

Kelly

Bill;

A lot is going to depend upon what arrow length you use, plus the fact mosr Hills are 3-5# heavier than marked?

Overspined

I'm guessing about 3 more weeks...waiting for a Hill T/D halfbreed, 68", 50#, small sleeve with the boo cores.  I am replacing a heavier 66" I sold, beautiful bow, just too short and heavy. After seeing Ben's Wapiti, I almost copied it!! That is one of many beautiful HH bows...and that snakewood...man is that cool.

Kelly is correct on the weight so be aware.

Check out my Howard Hill big thanks post. I didn't want it to get lost in this thread.

I see this comment all the time; it would make a lot more sense if HH Archery just marked their bows at the correct weight!!!

Jeff

No, no they cannot change now, it is too late, if they changed it would mess everyone up and we would all order bows too light.  It has become part of the Howard Hill tradition.
