I am trying to learn to shoot my HH Cougar 38@30 straight grip. Does a 1816 arrow sound right. That's what goes into the target butt straight bareshaft.I can also get the 1916 with a little more weight up front. If so does a 50-55 wood arrow sound right. It would also for us trying to hit something if some of you could post a pic of your bow hand placement on a straight grip form different angles. Thanks guys

Nate I'm not surprised at all.

The largest buck I ever took with a bow was taken while wearing a red and black plaid shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap, shoot I didn't even have a face mask on but my beard wasn't as white as it is these days...lol

God bless,Mudd

PS: BTW I was on my knees in a little depression surrounded by a couple of medium sized oaks and one cedar.

Dragonheart I went out this morning and did the same thing.  Walked two miles up rock creek and only found one water hole that was covered with sign.  Ususally that creek only stops flowing for about 2 weeks a year.  It hasn't had water moving in it since last august.  Broke up some deer pellets and there was alot of grass stems and seeds in it.  Grass is a low quality food of a secum digester but its all they have.  I need to take a deer out to relieve some pressure  ;)

I had a short fun hunt this evening with my "Old Tom".

I had gone to a "Celebration of life" party this afternoon honoring a new friend and didn't get out until late.

I was hunting a spot near my home so getting there quickly once I got home wasn't much of a big deal.

It has a salt lick on it that I started years ago and I noticed that it was about time to replenish the salt so I carry my army shovel and a bag of rock salt in with me.

Not far from the salt lick there's a natural depression (small sink hole) so I decided to try using it. When sitting in my Pacseat my knees are about ground level which allows for a different perspective..lol

Like I said I was late getting in so there wasn't time to put any brush behind me and I thought to myself I'll just see how this works.

Not as well as I had hoped...lol

I had 4 does come out maybe 40 yards from me and were sort of coming in my general direction and every one of them pick ed out but couldn't figure out what I was. I thought for a bit one of them might let curiosity get her killed.

They left and came back 3 different times to check me out. I think the last time they came back in response to my bleat call, but you really knows.

Anyway they burnt up almost all of my hunting time in the woods this evening and made it a fun experience.

I guess I'll make time for a back cover from now on...lol

God bless,Mudd

Range report: best group tonight had two fliers out of eight arrows (still have some of this dozen dinged up from the other night.) Six could be covered by my palm at twenty hards, one far left and one far right. The fliers were lapses on focus, I knew there were off when I let go.

I'm sticking with the lessons learned here, just keep on practicing over and over, one shot at a time. I've noticed I shoot better sitting, gonna reread the stickied threads on body position tonight.

14 days to the opening day in the majestic U.P. and I think I'll be hunting this Hill! (Cut a trail to my ground spots last weekend, can't wait to get back there!!! )

Congrats on the doe Mike!!!

Jeff, that looks fine but it looks like your shirt is what we call flannel  or is it wool?  Most of the year here it is too hot to wear those types of material so cotton is the go. As silly as it sounds it is very hard to get a checked cotton shirt in Australia. I have seen them on the WWW in the USA but I always wonder how the size would go but I must try some day.     :)

That sounds about right Thom.     :)

Good huntin' to you all - enjoy your time out bush as we would say!!!

The shirt is a columbia brand.  The material is supposed to wick, and protect from the sun.  Just got the shirt seeing how it looks in the woods.  It does not appear to have a sheen like many materials.  Lots of green as you can tell where i hunt.

Thanks Jeff. It seems an interesting material and the colour suits your terrain. I just realized you are from Texas so it would be rather warm in your neck of the woods also.  :)

It was opening day of our archery whitetail deer season today and at 7:30 PM I was fortunate to fill my buck tag with a nice young 5 pt. Harvested him from a hide tucked in amongst some Buckthorn. He crossed walking slowly from right to left and I took him behind the last rib on the left side and the arrow exited behind the front shoulder on his right side. Shot him with my 68", 60# Big River Yew Hill style bow, cedar shaft, and original Woodsman head. It sure was exciting!

all that will matter is finding an arrow that will be 9-10gpp and flies consistently well for you.  consult the charts, the software, the opinions of others, the sun, moon and stars - but you will still need to do the testing on yer own.
