Nate, that's the way a bowhunter should look.  Enjoyed the pictures.

Okie man

Great story and pictures of your hunting grounds.

Thom what Nate said about shooting is the best advice anyone can give, I'll you a quick story, I started shooting in the early 1950s', I decided to buy a Howard Hill bow in the early 60s', that is when I got to talk to John Schultz.  He built me a Howard Hill Timbo, I shot that bow until John went into business in 1978.  I bought a Trophy Hunter from him and when I got home I shot that bow for a couple of weeks I decided I needed another one just like, I called him on the phone and asked him if he would build me another.  He asked me if there was something wrong with the bow, he asked me what I would want another one for than, after we talked for about 10 minutes he finally said I will build you another one but it will not shoot the same as the one you have.  When I got that bow in the mail you could lay the new one on top of the other and they were the same, but they sure shot different.  I learned my lesson and I have owned many bows over the years, but I learned to listen to what John told me, just to shoot one bow.  There is alot more I could say but I will quit now.

Thanks for a very good read and for underlining what hunting is all about.
Look forward to the elk encounters.
Cheers.

I had one typo in my last post "I was set for 3 under" should have been "It was set for 3 under" but regardless...

Nate, I tried your method and I just don't know what I'm looking for, I can't tell if this is tillered for 3 under or not. Maybe with time I'll understand it better.

For me, and this bow, I'm just thankful to have found the sweet spot with it's setup and my form! I'll buy nocks and arrows all day long and never complain!

Thank you for that bit on the "one bow" philosophy (and your reply Rod.) It seems to be very much in opposition to the overall feeling on tradgang, but it resonates well for me.

Back to the range tomorrow, hopefully I get a nice group WITHOUT a flier (read user error) so I can finally post a pic to this thread!

Enjoyed the story and photos Nate.

I have been using a checked shirt and jeans for a lot of years now and except for a hour or so standing in a tree I have hunted on the ground.

Even though I make bows I also pretty much stick to one bow. My current one is just on eleven years old but I am about to build myself a new one.

Nate Steen .

Jeff,  you're better than me....I've spent about 24 hours in a tree, enough to know not to do it again... :)

I'd love to come hunt those boars with you sometime...and goats, bulls, whatever....

Nate, if you or any of the fellas on here ever find yourselves heading down this way I'm sure a few of us could arrange a hunt or two for you. I always enjoy sharing a campfire with others.   :)

The only reason you'll find me in a tree these days is if I have to climb one to retrieve and errant arrow (they're like gold you know) or if to save my life from a really mean looking red eyed rabbit or the like...lol

God bless,Mudd

PS: Nate you are without excuse my friend so you might as well start your savings account now for a trip to "Down under".

I kinda have to hunt out of trees the property I hunt on is to small to stalk on I believe. I don't think It would be the smartest thing to go stalking thru game managment areas. I might end up in someone fridge or might head might be mounted on someones wall. I have watched Howard Hill shoot that croc in Tembo over and over and I woulod say my form from an elavation is kinda like his I think. Oh BTW I shot a small doe today about 10 o'clock!!!

Red Tailed Hawk

Congrats on the doe mike, any pics?
I'm drinking from a saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed

Hey Hawk I put a pic on the stickbow harvest thread because I shot her with a Jeffery curve, however,I was wearing a red and black wool shirt!

Nate Steen .

congrats Mike!  red & black works as good as it always did....

how about that...Mudd?

This morning went for a scouting/pig hunt.  No pigs, but was able to sneak up on a spike and a doe.  I got to within about 25 yrds of the spike.  The deer are showing the effects of the Texas drought.  Both deer where skinny looking.  He looked at me and I remained motionless.  I avoided making eye contact and he eventually went back up the loggin road and back to feeding in the thicket.  Not deer season, so just practicing skills on being around deer, no "letting loose.  The hogs have a good wallow in a pond by my old stand.  The "pond" is a mudhole now, very little water.  Out with my Schulz American longbow and some spruce arrows.  It was a good morning to be out and thankful for the pleasant temp this am.  Took a few photos.  Green shirt blends in pretty good.

Nate Steen .

Jeff...awesome stuff.  can't wait until you guys start hunting.  there should be some great stories of classy longbowmen wreaking havoc on a good time and game animals to boot!

love those kind of photos...they bespeak of simpler times when bowhunters were archers first.  and you proved that it works...you can get within shooting distance of game without blinds, stands, trailcams, scentblock, commercial camo, et al, et al....    love the backquiver hangin' low and white bowstring...and orange shafts

thanks for the encouraging post....
