Hey guys,
I'm new to traditional archery and need some guidance on what weight and spine arrows I should be shooting out of my recurve for hunting. I shoot a PSE Mustang that is 50# @28, my draw length is 25 1/2" and from what I've read that puts my personal draw weight at around 45#s. I currently hunt with a 70# compound so I'm use to shooting heavy/stiff arrows. What would y'all recommend? Thanks

McDave

The spine of the arrow is determined, in part, by the length of the arrow.  The longer the length, the weaker the spine.  A convenient length of arrow for your 25.5" draw length would be 27", which would give you a half inch more than you might actually need if your draw length increases with experience, a not uncommon occurrence. So your arrow would be a little stiffer than normal, because of the short length.  For that reason, I would suggest a 500 spine arrow, like the Gold Tip 3555 or equivalent.  You could start with a 150 grain tip, and if the arrow is too stiff, you could try a heavier tip or add supplemental weight behind the insert, which GT is designed to do.  If the arrow is too weak, you could cut a half inch off the front, which will stiffen the arrow.  Lighter than 150 grain broadheads are available, but are not optimal for hunting, in my opinion.

Clearly, it would be best to do this experimenting on just a shaft or two until you figure out what you want.

A 28" .600 spine gold tip with 250 up front would probably get you close

Other than that a 1916 aluminum would be a good arrow to look into
60" Bivouac Backland ILF longbow 42@27
58" Schafer Silvertip recurve 47@27
58" Primaltech Longbow 45@27

I shoot about the same and the the Heritage 75 with 200 grains up from work perfectly.

I'd go 600 spine at 27" (maybe even 28") and have a set of points from 145 up to 225 or 250. If you get a 50 or 100 gr brass insert, then of those points one should work very well. With factory insert I'm thinking 200 or 225 gr. But with carbon being very stiff at short lengths, 9 Shocks' 250gr point recommendation may be spot on. That setup should not be a problem for GPP. The PSEs have snappy limbs.

If you want to try some wood arrows let me know. I have some doug fir made up in 40-45, 45-50, 50-55. That way you can play around with different tip weights too and dial you arrows in.

Assuming your bow is not cut to or near to centre...

In my experience you will have a real problem if you want an arrow which does not hang too far off your shelf... Especially if you wish to use the std 125grn broadheads.

Look at:
Heritage 75
GT Trad 15/35
Wood Arrows 25-30 spine cut to 26"

If your bow is cut to centre you can use a stiffer spine or cut the arrows shorter...Which is what you wish to do.

Suspect you actual draw wt is closer to 43#s.
