Are there still any Canadian places that you can drive to for self guided/semi guided caribou hunts? I remember talking to a guy years ago about this and he claimed to do just that every year. Don't know if it's still possible or if anyone is doing it, but if so I am very interested

As far as I know, there are drive to hunts in the James Bay area of Quebec for barren ground caribou. Possibly in Newfoundland as well for woodland caribou.
Try googling  hunting outfitters in both provinces.

There is  in Alaska.  It's my understanding you need to hire a guide/outfitter to hunt in Canadian provinces, regardless of whether you can reach the hunting area by road.  That's why I don't hunt there.

Last I knew as long as you used one of their camps it was considered semi guided and allowed. Used to be about 1200/wk to do that from ads I remember seeing. However I just looked up rule changes and there are only about 1/4 of the tags this year so I'm guessing everything will be full blown hunts. Plus there are regulations on antler size now too to protect the bigger bulls as they are finding too few mature males in the herds. Prices are looking to be double a normal fully outfitted hunt and this is for only 1 animal now. Guess I won't be going

In Alaska you can bow hunt out of your vehicle off off of the haul road. Also keep in mind that to bow hunt in Alaska that you need a bowhunter certification.

And just getting there from Maine would be expensive! I was hoping to find something fairly inexpensive, relatively close to home where I could keep costs down.Those days are apparently long gone. It was to be a meat hunt, since my wife has digestive problems and can only eat wild game for meat without it making her sick and she has really been wanting to try caribou- well reindeer (basically the same thing) due to her norwegian heritage. I would love to hunt Alaska and someday hope to get there but the cost of flying across the entire country and renting a 4wd vehicle plus ins, fuel, etc would end up being close to an outfitted hunt I think. Right now that's not possible. Basically Caribou anywhere is out the window for me for now. I didnt know until after I put this up how bad things are right now in eastern Canada for the caribou
