Well yesterday was the last day of our deer season here in Maryland.  Its been a great year with a lot of highs and a couple lows mid-season when my shooting went to the S$%T.  A little tip from a tournament shooter friend of mine got me shooting better than ever in the end.

We got a bunch of snow last weekend (24") and the woods were a nice white that we do not get that often.  I figured it was a good day for just walk around and note the deer movement in the snow and gain a little knowledge for next years late season.  I carried my new to me TT Titan.

I went to  new urban spot that I have wanted to check out for the last couple years and instantly go into plenty of sign.  I worked my way up a creek bottom and when I came to a spot where two valleys converged I noticed a bunch of tracks moving to the one that moved north.  Problem was the wind was coming out of the south so I went up the west valley a ways then cut up and over towards the valley with all the movement.  As I started to fall over he edge I knew something was going to happen thinking this is the perfect spot of deer to bed.  It was about 1:30 in the afternoon. I nocked and arrow and moved forward.  I had not gone 30 yards when I noticed a buck bedded right below me.  He was shielded by some holly so I cautiously moved down and to the right.  I finally got a clear shot when I was around 18 yards away.  This area has a lot of vehicle traffic and I have to think it helped quiet my approach.  I settled in and let the FMJ with 100 grain insert and 200 grain VPA two blade on its way.  It hit perfectly and the buck jumped up and disappeared over a ridge 60 yards away.  It was pretty evident by the blood trail that it was a good hit.  I walked to the edge of the ridge and he was laying about 10 yards over the hill.  I've taken a deer on the last day of our extended gun season but never on the last archery day.  To top it off I met the pastor of a small Baptist church when I came out of the woods.  Very nice gentleman and was very grateful when I offer to donate some meat to his parishioners in need.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki
