Going to get a Toelke Whip HS, 51 or so# at my draw length.

Probably going to have SNAG make me up some Surewoods for it.

I'm wondering if the super express from Ace broadheads are going to be too big for elk-impeding penetration?

No.. I love that head..!! Out of a 47# Holcomb 59' Kodiak repro and a 51# Holcomb 59' repro as well. I regularly shoot 200-225 up from with field points as well.....you'll like these...:-D

No that will be a great head for you and will get the job done nicely.

I think you'd be ok, but I personally like to stay around 1 3/16" wide.  I'd probably roll with Grizzly kodiaks or Ribtek 190 gr.

If the big heads scare you I would put 5.5" fletching on them.

If you need to come down in weight a little,  I like STOS 160 grn heads.

One of my favorite heads.  Get great penetration with it and they are so easily sharpened on a KME.

I agree, no.  Get them flying well (tuning) ahead of time and go get em !  We all worry too much.

I've learned in my own woods that for deer I want the biggest head i can fit on the arrow and penetration is never a problem in the high 40's and up,, I do opt for at least 12gpp with my arrows and bareshaft tune them.

Go for it.  That wood arrow will increase weight and penetration.  QUIET too.

Trying to decide whether or not to get the tapered woods. I don't have the bow yet, have to sell mine first then get on the list so this is getting the cart in front of the horse I suppose.

Interested in those Ribteks, don't hear much about them. How do those ribs effect penetration or do they at all?

I haven't found a cooperative elk yet, but a couple of deer and some turkeys haven't complained. No problem at all with arrow flight with those big heads.

That is a great head and one of the  easiest to sharpen

ymountainman

You can get them in single bevel too!

I really like the express. I haven't tried the super express yet but would like to.

I'm a big head guy. In the 50's I used the Goshawk, in the 60's and 70's I used the big Deadhead, In the 80's and 90's I used Glen Parkers Timberwolf. I've been using the Ace Super Express for a longgg time and have killed a lot of stuff with it.

It's a GREAT head... USE IT, it won't let you down

I shot 160 Ribteks for several years and never noticed any penetration issue from the ribbed ferrule.  Glue fills up the spaces and it becomes pretty smooth and flush.  For sure the head will never pull off over the glue in the spaces.  Ribteks are an extremely tough head that sharpen and perform very well.
