Custom String Recommendation

I could use a custom string maker and string recommendation. There are a few companies I used for compounds but I don't know the first place to go for Traditional.

The bow I need a string for is a 64" BigJim Buffalo #45 @ 28"

I also need an idea of strand count/material. A plus would be a company that uses musk ox for string silencers but that's not a "musk".

Why not order a new string from BigJim for you buffalo? He may have the musk silencers also.

Search custom bowstring in the PowWow category and you will find a lot of recommendations, feedback and bowstring information - pages of it. Regardless of who you get the string from I suggest using BCY-X for the material. I like 18-20 strands.

The reason I like BCY-X is it's very durable, quiet, and very stable even in higher temps.

BCY-X is made from 83% SK90 Dyneema (the highest grade HMPE currently available) with 17% Vectran blended in. The Vectran is what keeps the material stable even when the temps go up, and seems to help make the material quieter as well.

18-20 strands sounds like a lot, but BCY-X is a very small strand--about 1/2 the diameter of Dynaflight '97. Depending on the type nock you use, 18-20 strands (with Flemish, pad the loops to 24 with B-55) and the proper size serving will give you a good nock fit.

I've made thousands of strings in the last 20 years (quit counting at 10,000 several years ago), and to date BCY-X is my favorite.

I suggest you give 10RingStrings a call. The new Brownell Fury or BCY 8190F fibers are 100% SK90 Dyneema. I like my new Fury bowstring a lot. Be aware that these new string materials are ultra low stretch which means that you'll get more of your bow's potential power to your arrow and that could change the tune of your arrows. I went from my bare shaft showing slightly stiff (nock right) using a Dynaflight 97 string to showing weak (nock left) shooting my new Fury string. I fixed it by shortening my shafts by 1/8". You can't go wrong wih Fury, 8190F or BCY-X.

I'm still a fan of SBD. One of these days I may try the newer stuff but for now I'm happy and see no reason to change.

The only down-side to using a 100% Dyneema material is you can experience some stretch/creep when the temps get high. Lots of variables that will determine how much--draw weight, string length, strand count, actual temps, etc. In some cases it may be none or so little you won't notice..in other cases, it can be a pain.

That's the reason blended materials were developed. Early on, the materials with total stability/zero stretch, like Kevlar and Vectran, were great for bow strings...until they broke with no warning.

This led to BCY (the founders of BCY also invented the original Fast Flight) developing the first blended material, which soon became known as 450 Premium. It was improved and became 450+, then another upgrade with 452X.

When SK90 Dyneema became available, it wasn't long until BCY-X was invented. There's no other material on the market like it--BCY has it patented, so unlike most other materials nobody else can (legally) copy it.
