I've been giving still hunting a try without much success.  I have kicked a few up but never saw them until they were on the run.  Today I was walking down a tail, trying to avoid the leaves, when I stopped to scan  with the binoculars.  The first look was staring right at a 6 point 30 yds out through thick saplings.  He was upwind and heading right to a clearing about 20 yds away.  As soon as his head came out of the thick stuff the wind pulled a 180 and his head snapped up so fast I thought he might have whiplash.  He gave a quick look around and was gone.  Anyway that is the closest I have been during a still hunt.  I wish I could attribute it to skill but it feels like all luck.

My grandpa told me ounce when he hit his first  hole in one on a par 3 ( he was a golfer )....

"People called me lucky he said, when you try to do something and practice at it and then you actually succeed, how is that luck?"

Your out doing something you love and had a glimmer of success at what your trying to achieve......

No Luck There   :thumbsup:

How much fun was that?

What a great experience, nice job!

Hunting is definitely mostly luck.  But those who hunt hardest and smartest tend to be a lot luckier than most.

Oh, for a minute there I thought you shot a truck !

You did something right, and yeah, luck was with you, but even luck doesn't help when you didn't do it right.  Go do it again....

Hey man I have been trying my hand at still hunting for whitetails about 3-4 years now. This season has been my most successful so far. By that I mean I have seen more deer, gotten close to more deer, and been busted by more deer than ever before. I also rock natural ground blinds when the mood suits me and took my only deer this season from one. It takes time brother and boots on the ground. I think most people get discouraged after a season but, it can be done if you dedicate yourself.

they are much better equipped to detect motion than we are.  their camo is much better than ours.  Seems like you did everything perfectly.  I would say it was a full blown success.  Congrats!!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I have to admit a lot of times feeling still hunting was hopeless.  Between the crunching leaves, thick brush, squirrley winds and their home field advantage it seemed impossible.   So I was pretty pumped to have seen him before he knew I was there.  The way my heart was pumping it may be just as well he tagged me instead of me telling a story of a blown shot.  At least now I know it can be done with persistence and a bit ofluck.

That is real life hunting, pal! Congrats, live, and build on what you have learned!

BTW, your season has been more productive than mine!

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
