Called all morning and no takers. At about 1:00 was walking to a good spot and see a coyote laying down maybe 200 yards out. Started a sneak on it . Keeping a row of trees hiding me. Was able to get to within fourty yards or so and took this picture.

The wind was perfect and he was out ,I could see him twitching his ears, tail and hind legs. I started to get the shakes So I tried to relax . Had my boots off and my socks was damp ,mushy and full of stickers and stuff.
. Moved to the right and closer for a better shot and Oh @#$% He perked up his ears. Thinking this is it.

Waiting for him to get up and run but he just went back to sleep. A little closer shot zoomed the camera a bit. After this I hung the camera in the tree I was behind.

Was at maybe 25 +- yards and new I could not get any closer. Telling myself don't look at the coyote just look at the spot. Let the arrow go and it hits right were I was looking, the thunk of the arrow seemed really loud at the time. It jumps in the air spins and runs right at me .Zips past me ,missing me buy five feet. Goes about thirty yards rolls gets up and goes another fifty yards and rolls but this time it stays down. Man I was shaking like crazy. Sat down and collected myself. Took me twenty minutes to find my camera I left hanging in that tree.
How I found him.

There's the other half of my arrow.

Spent the rest of the day checking out some new orchards that the owner just got. On the way in I guy stopped me and ask what I was doing. Seen the coyote and now I have his place to hunt on now. Pretty good start for this year.

It was a long walk back to my truck and I'm not even going tell how long it took me to find my boots.

Possum Head

Only you could pull that off. Congrats he's the biggest I've seen. What is their primary food source in the orchard and do they just eat get fat and sleep all in one place?

olddogrib

Great stalk, you da man!  I'm with you, Possum.  I'd never expect to find a coyote there in broad daylight...looks like a drunk passed out!  Is that an apple orchard?

Very cool! Way to pull off as nice stalk. I enjoyed the pictures. Good eye to spot him sleeping out in the open.

A hunt based only on trophies taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be . . . time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there.
